October 12 Marks the 28th Anniversary of the Uncovering of the Relics of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco.
Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of St. John twice a year: on the day of his Glorification (July 2); as well as on the anniversary of the uncovering of his relics, which took place on October 12, 1993.
Vladyka John reposed in the Lord on July 2, 1966. After his blessed repose, Saint John continued to provide healings and miracles to many who turned to him in faith, just as it happened during his life.
Many wrote letters to him as if he were still alive, and these same letters, along with names of loved ones to commemorate, were placed under St. John mitre in his crypt, and a lot of people received the expected help from him.
In the fall of 1993, the Synod of Bishops instructed the Archbishop of Western America and San Francisco to head up a commission to examine the remains of Vladika John. On the evening of October 11, a funeral service was served by the members of the commission in the crypt of the Saint.
Archbishop Anthony said a short sermon urging all participants in this holy deed to reconcile any differences, and he himself asked everyone for forgiveness and then blessed the opening of the coffin. Having removed the lid off of the sarcophagus, those present took out the metal coffin of the Saint and noticed that in many places it had rusted. With the fear of God and prayer, they opened the lid of the coffin. The face of the Saint was covered, but everyone immediately noticed his imperishable hands. After having prayed further, Archbishop Anthony removed the veil from the face of the Saint, and the participants saw the incorrupt face of the Glorified Saint.
Currently, the former crypt of St. John contains a small church in which the Liturgy is served several times a year, as well as the Rite of Baptism. The relics of the Saint are present in the Russian Cathedral in San-Francisco which is open daily to pilgrims. The shrine with the relics of St. John is the most visited site for Orthodox pilgrims in the United States.

Церковь празднует память святителя Иоанна два раза в году - в день прославления (2 июля), а также в годовщину обретения мощей, которое состоялось 12 октября 1993 года.
Владыка Иоанн почил о Господе 2 июля 1966 года. По блаженном преставлении своем святитель Иоанн продолжал подавать различные исцеления и чудотворения многим, обращающимся к нему с верою так же, как это происходило и при его жизни. Когда никакие земные средства не помогали в беде, люди обращались к почившему владыке за ходатайством о них перед Господом. Многие писали ему письма, как к живому, и эти письма вместе с записочками с именами клались под митру святого Иоанна на его гробнице, и получали ожидаемую помощь.
Осенью 1993 года Архиерейский Синод поручил Архиепископу Западно-Американскому и Сан-Францисскому во главе комиссии, составленной из еще двух архипастырей, освидетельствовать останки святителя Иоанна. Вечером 11 октября после панихиды, отслуженной членами комиссии в усыпальнице Святителя, Архиепископ Антоний произнес краткое слово, призывая всех участников этого святого дела примириться друг с другом, и сам, попросив у всех прощения, благословил открыть гробницу. Сняв крышку саркофага, присутствующие достали из него металлический гроб Святителя и заметили, что во многих местах он проржавел. Со страхом Божиим и молитвою открыли гроб. Лицо Святителя было закрыто, но все сразу обратили внимание на его нетленные руки. Помолившись, Архиепископ Антоний снял с лица Святителя воздух, и участники освидетельствования увидели нетленный лик Богом прославленного святого.
В настоящее время в бывшей усыпальнице святого Иоанна размещена небольшая церковь, в которой несколько раз в год служится литургия, а также совершаются крещения. Мощи же Святителя находятся в Соборе в Сан-Франциско, который ежедневно открыт для богомольцев. Рака с мощами святого Иоанна является самым посещаемым местом православных паломников в США.
