A beautiful reminder from the life of Hasan al-Basri (رحمه الله):

A man once came to him complaining that his garden wouldn’t bear fruit. Hasan al-Basri replied, “Make Tawbah (seek forgiveness).”
Another came, distressed by poverty. Hasan again said, “Make Tawbah.”
Then a third man came, asking for prayers to be blessed with a child. Again, the same answer: “Make Tawbah.”
His companions, curious, asked: “Three different people, three very different problems — yet you gave the same advice to all?”

Hasan al-Basri replied: “I did not say this from myself. Allah, the Most High, says in Surah Nuh (10–12):

"Ask forgiveness from your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers, and give you increase in wealth and children, and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers." (Qur’an 71:10–12)

Imam al-Qurtubi said about this verse:
“In it is clear proof that seeking forgiveness brings provision (rizq), rain, and blessings.”

May we never underestimate the power of Istighfar (seeking forgiveness). 💧🌱

When Fitnah Strikes, Turn to Allah – Lessons from Surah Al-Kahf (18:9–11)

Have you reflected on the story of the youth mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf?

أَمْ حَسِبْتَ أَنَّ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْكَهْفِ وَٱلرَّقِيمِ كَانُوا۟ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا عَجَبًا

-“Do you think the People of the Cave and the Inscription were a wonder among Our signs?”
(Surah Al-Kahf, 18:9)

These were young believers living in a time of intense fitnah. Surrounded by disbelief and oppression, they chose to stand firm in their imaan and turned sincerely to Allah:

إِذْ أَوَى ٱلْفِتْيَةُ إِلَى ٱلْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةًۭ وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًۭا

“Our Lord! Grant us mercy from Yourself, and guide us rightly in our affair.”
(18:10)

In response, Allah protected them in the most miraculous way:

فَضَرَبْنَا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ فِى ٱلْكَهْفِ سِنِينَ عَدَدًۭا

“So We cast a cover of sleep over their ears in the cave for a number of years.”
(18:11)

This story gives us a clear blueprint for navigating trials:
1. Remain steadfast in belief.
2. Distance yourself from harmful environments when necessary.
3. Most importantly—call upon Allah directly, with sincerity and reliance.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever memorizes the first ten verses of Surah al-Kahf will be protected from the trial of the Dajjal.”
(Sahih Muslim – Abu al-Darda’)

Another narration says:

“…the last ten verses.”

This is why it’s recommended to recite Surah Al-Kahf every Friday—to prepare our hearts and protect ourselves from fitnah, especially the greatest of all: the Dajjal.

When fitnah appears, the answer is simple: turn to Allah.

Revelation Context: Surah Al-Fatiha was revealed in Makkah during the early period of the Prophet’s mission. It is considered one of the very first revelations and serves as an introduction to the Qur’an, encapsulating its message. Scholars say it was revealed twice—once in Makkah and once in Madinah—and is recited in every unit of the Muslim prayer.

Reflection: Surah Al-Fatihah is the greatest chapter in the Qur’an, Prophet ﷺ said: “ 'All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds.’ It is the seven oft-repeated verses and the Magnificent Qur’an that I have been granted.” (Bukhari, 4474)
It is a pillar of every Muslim’s prayer—without it, the prayer is not valid. The Prophet ﷺ called it the “Mother of the Book,” capturing the essence of the Quran’s guidance. Allah refers to Al-Fatihah in Surah Al-Hijr (15:87) as the seven oft-repeated verses.
The first three verses teach us that Allah is the Most Merciful, the Lord and Sustainer of all the worlds—instilling gratitude, reverence, and trust in His mercy. The last four ayahs guide our hearts to seek Allah’s help alone, ask for the straight path, and protect us from misguidance and divine displeasure.
Surah Al-Fatihah is also a source of healing; the Prophet ﷺ confirmed it as a Ruqyah. It was revealed as a divine light, unique to the Prophet ﷺ, never given to any Prophet before him.
An angel descended with it and declared glad tidings of the “two lights”—Al-Fatihah and the last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.
This surah teaches us how to truly worship, ask sincerely, and walk firmly on the guided path of righteousness.

Uqbah Ibn Aamir (Radhi Allaahu Anhu) relates that Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon him) came out when we were in as-Suffah and said:

“Are there any of you who would wish to go every day to Buthaan or al-’Aeeq [i.e., the name of two ditches in al-Madeenah] in the early morning and return from it with two she-camels without incurring any sin or severing relations?”

We [the companions] said: “We would indeed love that, O Messenger of Allah”

He (Peace be upon him) said: “Then you should go to the mosque and acquire some knowledge, or recite two aayaat from the Book of Allaah, that would be better for you than two she-camels, and three aayaat are better than three she-camels, and four aayaat are better than four she-camels, and the same for a like number of camels”
[Muslim 1/553]

As-Suffah was a shaded platform in the Prophet’s Mosque where poor and homeless companions (Ashab al-Suffah) stayed, learning directly from the Prophet (peace be upon him).

In the time of the Prophet, a she-camel was a prized and valuable asset — perhaps today’s equivalent of a luxury car that anyone would desire. Yet the Prophet (peace be upon him) beautifully reminds us that even reciting a few verses of the Qur’an outweighs such worldly treasures.

This hadith deeply inspires me to engage more with the Qur’an — to reflect, read, and share. So, I’ll be starting a small journey of posting a verse a day, first and foremost as a reminder for myself, and then for anyone else who may benefit.

May Allah accept it as sadaqah for all of us and grant us the reward we hope for. Ameen.
