For reflection:
Art - The Road to Emmaus by Daniel Bonnell

Luke 24:13-35
Eating with the risen Christ

24:13
Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem,

24:14
and talking with each other about all these things that had happened.

24:15
While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them,

24:16
but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

24:17
And he said to them, "What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?" They stood still, looking sad.

24:18
Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?"

24:19
He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

24:20
and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him.

24:21
But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place.

24:22
Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning,

24:23
and when they did not find his body there they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.

24:24
Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him."

24:25
Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared!

24:26
Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?"

24:27
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

24:28
As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on.

24:29
But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went in to stay with them.

24:30
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.

24:31
Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished from their sight.

24:32
They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?"

24:33
That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem, and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together.

24:34
They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!"

24:35
Then they told what had happened on the road and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

A Quaker Poem

I have walked through valleys deep

And traveled mountains high

My ears bled as I strained to hear

The sound of people passing by

I looked for God in oceans depths

And in grand tomes of old

I sought God in the fireside

And sat there feeling cold

I was sunk deep in the mire

Drowning in my own despair

There was no sign the Spirit heard me

Except the hand that reached me there

A minister of kindness

She did not pull me out

But she offered just a morsel

To the hunger of my doubt

When she had gone I lingered

With questions in my mind

More years passed with searching

I have answers yet to find

God wasn’t in the books I read

And wasn’t in the flames

God was a light within me

Dimmed by all the pain

Like an ember that has fallen

From a roaring fireside

My light was growing darker

But it never truly died

That light was re-ignited

Round a circle of my Friends

In silent contemplation

God spoke to me again

For God is light and God is love

Renewed again in me

A spark nourished by others

A faith that’s meant to be

These song lyrics are based on An Epistle To Convinced Friends, In 1656 by Margaret Fell.

Don’t walk in darkness
Cause you have light
Let it search you
Let it give you life

It is through Jesus
That we are free
It is in his Light
That we can see

It is by God’s grace that all of us abide
And from God’s light not one if us can hide

It is by your fruit
You will be known
The Lord planteth
And crops are grown

So search within you
Try and you’ll see
If you grow fruit or
Leaves on your tree

The tree that bears no fruit must surely be cut down
You must search and know if you are growing now

My Friends deal plainly
For your own good
What the Light searches
Will be understood

Don’t walk in darkness
Cause you have light
Let it search you
Let it give you life

It will lay you open and expose all your soul
Or it will lead and guide and heal and make you whole

This Light of God has
come unto us all
And in this Light you
either stand or fall

So dwell in love and
Live in unity
May God’s Light keep you
All faithfully

Keep your minds to all that which is pure
May God’s love keep and preserve you evermore

This Light of God has
come unto us all
And in this Light you
either stand or fall

Don’t walk in darkness
Cause you have light
Let it search you
Let it give you life

Portland Friends Meeting recently met, discerned, and found unity to donate money as one response to the genocide in Gaza. The meeting made a donation of $75,000 from its Shared Witness Fund to the American Friends Service Committee.

Portland Friends acknowledge: "Our work is not done, and we remain complicit in violence through the actions of our government. We challenge ourselves and each other to reach deeply and contribute what we can to address humanitarian needs, and to use our gifts of every sort for the expression of Love in the face of horror, which may involve actions that confront the policies and funding that perpetrate violence.”
