Saint Luke was on fire this weekend! (no firetrucks this time). Club 456 camped out Saturday night on our campus in tents and had a great time roasting hot dogs and marshmallows at our firepit. Then Sunday morning brought the Pentecost Pageant with music and our narrators celebrating the birth of the church. We heard the good news proclaimed in many languages, and heard the Lord's Prayer in Teluga, as well as witnessing it in ASL.

"Mighty God, you breathe life into our bones, and your Spirit brings truth to the world. Send us this Spirit, transform us by your truth, and give us language to proclaim your gospel, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever."

So begins the Pentecost Pageant at Saint Luke Lutheran Church in Devon. Our celebration will feature professional actors, the Senior Choir, soloists, children, and bell ringers. Down the aisle we'll process with fiery flags and the narrators will lead us through the birthday of the Christian faith. Several of our parishioners will help read the Gospel in languages of the world. The pageant will feature songs, psalms, and hymns from many places including original music from Saint Luke's Director of Music, John Rea. Join in the celebration! All are welcome! No exceptions! Wear your red, orange, yellow and white clothes - the colors of fire - and get into the act. This interactive pageant will bring to life this special moment in the church.

Every once in a while, Jesus says something that leaves us perplexed: "Sell everything you own." "Hate your father and mother." An outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth. With guidance from author Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, we will explore how these difficult teachings would have sounded to the people who first heard them, how have they been understood over time, and how we might interpret them in the context of the Gospel of love and reconciliation. Come learn together! Come be challenged, inspired, provoked, and comforted. Books are available for $15 but are not necessary to join in the conversation.

The Saint Luke Bistro Bible Study is held Wednesday nights from 7-8:30PM. This series starts May 27th thru July 1st. Come join us for lively conversations over drinks and snacks. No Bible study experience necessary. Join anytime during the series. All Are Welcome!

Part 2 of Getting to Know Mark Klinger. Mark joined the Saint Luke church staff on May 18th as our new Office and Services Manager. Mark will be training with Allen Benner-Smith. Allen will be retiring June 30, 2026.

For what in your life do you feel most grateful?
I’m most thankful for my husband, Joey. He’s one of the most supportive and loving people I’ve ever met. He has had my back since the day we met. I’m completely convinced that we were given each other.

What's your favorite church service or season every year, why?
I don’t know why, but I love the solemn seasons. Both Lent and Advent have a solemnity and anticipation that mirrors our Christian walk—be it the anticipation of the coming of Christ in Advent, or the anticipation of the cross, it models our Christian anticipation for the victory over evil and the grave.

What is your favorite snack?
We often joke that I was meant to be British. Nothing makes me quite as happy as a cup of Earl Grey, a scone (rhymes with gone because when it’s scone its gone) and a Jaffa cake or two.

Describe yourself in three words.
I'd like to think that Compassionate, Faithful, and Creative describe me pretty well.

If you could relive one moment in your life, which would it be?
A single moment? That’s really difficult. I’d replay my wedding day if I could. We were married in an ELCA church in Pittsburgh, (St. Andrew, Shadyside) with our families there and our best friends. We had an incredible reception on the Gateway Clipper, which are riverboats that host parties and dinners on the 3 rivers in Pittsburgh. It was truly beautiful because everyone there was there in love and support.

Tell us a little about yourself, what do you want Saint Luke to know?
Well, I grew up in northeast Ohio, in a little city called Warren. Warren’s claims to fame are being the home of Neil Armstrong, Dave Grohl, and where the old Packard cars were originally from. I attended a very small, Assemblies of God high school before going on the Kent State University. We moved to the Philadelphia area after marrying my husband because he enrolled at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. While living at LTSP, I started working at the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, on the Bishop’s staff. Thus began my career in church administration and my joining the Episcopal church.

How do you spend your free time?
Joey and I both love to travel when we’ve got free time, especially on cruises. On a more day-to-day use of free time, I can usually be found either reading or writing, two of my biggest passions. I’m also a Titanic researcher. I’ve spent thousands of hours researching the Titanic, speaking with historians, pouring over wreck pictures and videos and reading survivor accounts and inquiry testimony. Even though the event happened more than 114 years ago, I really think that there’s a lesson that the Titanic story continues to teach us.

What do you like most about working for a church?
I firmly believe church administration is ministry by its own right. Good administrators support the mission in ways that allow the organization, it’s leaders, pastors, and congregation to guide and do the work of direct ministry. I feel like it is in and of itself, vocational. But it’s also not just about the organizational skills, there’s also a point of contact part. The person in the office is often one of the first people who is seen or spoken to by folks at often celebratory or vulnerable places in their lives. There’s a form of ministry in holding those vulnerable points with people even for just a moment.

What does a dog, a bike shop and a stained glass window have in common? They all received Mustard Seed Grants! A Mustard Seed Grant can help “seed” small projects for non-profits that can bring big results. Mustard Seed Grants enhance the mission of Saint Luke Lutheran Church: To Know, Love and Serve Christ. Saint Luke members must sponsor each grant proposal. If you are a Saint Luke member, and know of a non-profit project that will benefit from a Mustard Seed Grant, contact the church office for an application.
