A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
—Proverbs 15:1

Why is it so hard to endure unjust and unfair criticism? Why do we feel that we have to defend ourselves regardless of how ridiculous or unfair the accusations against us are? Why do we have to have the last word in any argument, or look to get even if we don't?
Often, the problems we have with others in an argument escalate because we do not choose "a gentle answer."
So, why do we not choose "a gentle answer"? These are the excuses I hear from others, and sometimes I make them myself:
"I don't want to appear to be weak!"
"I don't like to lose at anything!"
"I don't want that person to have the last word!"
"I resent the unfair things, the demeaning things, that person called me!"
When I look at these excuses — some of them are my excuses — the same pronoun appears again and again: the pronoun, "I." And what is in the middle of all sin? A great big ol' "I," always — sIn! We lose sight of saying what is in "the interests of others" (Philippians 2:3-4) and poison our influence on others because of our selfish, "I"-infected speech. In place of the "I" problem, let's focus on saying "only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen" (Ephesians 4:29). To do that means that we use "a gentle answer"!

Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
—Hebrews 9:28

Can you think of anything more exciting than waiting for Jesus to come take us home to share with him in his glory?!
Ours isn't a passive wait. Jesus gave us a commission to take his story to the whole world and invite others to prepare and join with us in awaiting his glorious return. We worship and praise our great God as we anticipate this great day — as we eagerly await him. We joyfully anticipate our salvation, trusting that it is nearer now than when we first believed (Romans 13:11). We stand on spiritual tiptoe, eagerly awaiting our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:20). We not only believe, we anticipate his return to bring the full experience of salvation promised to "those who are waiting for him." But until then, we work on mission so that others will join us in our anticipation, and say with us, "Maranatha! Come, O Lord (1 Corinthians 16:22).

I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride, beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.
—Revelation 21:2-4

I don't know about you, but I'm kind of ready for that old order stuff to go away. The end of tears, death, mourning, crying, violence, abuse, suffering, war, divisive politics, and pain sounds pretty good to me! No wonder the early Christians would say, "Maranatha. Come, O Lord" (1 Corinthians 16:22). They couldn't wait. How about us? How about you? What is keeping you from saying, "Lord Jesus, please come, and come soon? I urge you to put it aside, or put it under the lordship of Jesus, and use those moves to make you ready to receive the glory yet to be revealed in us (Romans 8:18; Colossians 3:3-4). Let's make ourselves ready for the time when:

But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children — with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.
—Psalm 103:17-18

Forever love is sometimes talked about in dime store novels, but this kind of love is only found in God's faithful lovingkindness. Thankfully, we can tap into that reservoir of eternal and divine love through the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus pours into our hearts to help us both receive that kind of forever love and share it with others (John 7:37-39; Romans 5:5). Importantly, our verse emphasizes how God's kind of love is multigenerational — generations before us passed it along to us, and we must pass it on to the generations that come after us. This multigenerational principle is not just a practice of celebrating God's love and our love for others found under the Old Covenant; it is also one that the apostle Paul taught Timothy to pass on to Jesus' disciples (2 Timothy 2:1-2). Ours is a multigenerational celebration of the goodness of God — "from everlasting to everlasting the Lord's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children." We must celebrate the goodness and love of our God so that our grandchildren can know God and celebrate his goodness in their day and share it with their children, and children's children!

You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.
—Galatians 5:13

Our freedom as followers of Jesus, the freedom to live by the power of the Spirit and not by law (Romans 8:1-4; Galatians 5:1), is a wonderful gift, especially when it is handled with responsibility and grace (Romans 14:13; 1 Peter 2:16). Not being under law is such a sweet grace, but we want to pass that sweetness on to each other through service, kindness, and care (Romans 13:10). Just because we are free to do something doesn't mean doing it is beneficial to our brothers and sisters in Christ or to those we are trying to influence toward Jesus. Freedom gives us the opportunity to do things in love, not just because we are commanded to do them. Love should be, could be, and must mean more than law.

As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.
—Ecclesiastes 11:5

I don't know!"
This sure seems to be one of the hardest phrases for us to say. When thinking about God and his ways, especially his work on us and plans for us made when we were in the womb, that's really all we can say. "I don't know!" The truths we know about God and his ways with us when we were in the womb are only what he has chosen to reveal to us. He is the Mystery of mysteries. He is the supreme unknowable Knowable. Yet what we do know of him, what he has revealed to us in Jesus, is not only mighty and awesome, but loving, tender, and merciful. We know his love is willing to sacrifice for us, so we could seek after him and find his grace. So in reverence, we kneel to pray to the Father we cannot fully know — at least not yet, but will one day (1 John 3:1-3) — but can be fully assured that he loves us and wants us near to him.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
—Ephesians 4:32

Be kind and compassionate? These two qualities seem to be in short supply these days as we look at social media, politics, and people's personal agendas. Maybe it's because we hold up the wrong heroes? Maybe it is because we haven't let the Holy Spirit rule in our hearts? Unfortunately, kindness and compassion are two qualities often seen as signs of weakness rather than strength. To forgive as God forgave us requires great courage and great strength, two resources the Holy Spirit can supply if we pray for that strength, and pray for that strength in our brothers and sisters (Ephesians 3:14-21). So, let's pray for each other to be strong and courageous, and display those qualities through our kindness and compassion! Let's forgive each other, as God in Christ has forgiven us.
My Prayer...

Holy God, there is no way I can adequately thank you for sacrificing so much to forgive me and lavish me with your loving compassion. Today, I ask the Holy Spirit to help me as I pledge to be more like Jesus: to share more of his kindness and compassion with those who have wronged me. Father, please forgive them. Today, I ask you to help me forgive and release my bitterness toward _____________. I also ask that you bless each of those people with your kindness and grace. By the power of the Holy Spirit, and because of Jesus' example, I pray to grow in these graces of kindness and compassion, forgiving others as you have forgiven me. Amen.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
—Philippians 4:6-7

God wants to hear our prayers. But to keep them from becoming too self-focused, God wants us always to remember to give thanks (Philippians 4:6). It is so easy for us to turn prayer into a request line. We are the ones who are left bereft when thanksgiving and praise are robbed from our prayers. Without praise, our hearts grow dim because all we think about is our problems, and prayer becomes a wish list of stuff we selfishly want, treating God as our heavenly Santa Claus rather than the Father who sacrificed everything to make us his children!
