Good morning, Detroit! Nearly a century ago, our Skinner Opus 808 was built in an era when great organs were often designed to be heard rather than seen. They were built for something deeper than appearance: function, craftsmanship, and a voice powerful enough to fill a vast room even when much of the instrument remained hidden. Every pipe, wind chest, valve, and mechanism had to do its work faithfully out of sight.

From the organ console—comparatively simple, almost workmanlike—the breathtaking sanctuary of Historic Trinity stretches out beneath it nearly a city block away. The One told within the song gets the glory. The organ simply serves us to see Him. Some of the most important things in life and in the Church happen where nobody is looking. For generations, our beloved "Opie" has quietly reminded us... you don’t have to be seen to fill a place with something glorious.

Good morning, Detroit! For as many close-ups as we post, beautiful churches were never meant to be photographed in isolation. She belongs in the middle of things. In the middle of people going to work. In the middle of ambulances and traffic jams. In the middle of neighborhoods changing. In the middle of poverty and prosperity. In the middle of people who believe deeply and people who aren't sure what they believe at all.

From this distance, Historic Trinity doesn't dominate Detroit. It inhabits it. A church planted right in the middle of the ordinary, complicated, beautiful life of a city. And perhaps that is exactly where Jesus wants His Church to be.

Good morning, Detroit! Every old church has two versions of itself. There is the one you see on Sunday morning. And then there is the one that appears when you turn off the lights:

Thousands upon thousands of nights, Detroit continues to change outside its walls. Streetcars disappearing. Breweries coming down. Stadiums going up. Wars beginning and ending. Generations being born, growing old, and disappearing. And through all of it, every evening, this place returned to the dark. Until somebody unlocked the door again. Maybe that is one of the strangest things about an old church:

Morning keeps finding it.
