LAST FRIDAY, while many were getting an early start on their Memorial Day weekend, we were visited by a group of students from Benedictine College in Kansas. As part of our Volunteers in Mission - Felician Sisters program, the students helped out in the Cafe, Food Pantry and Community Garden.

We appreciated their generous service and their positive spirit!

AN ANONYMOUS DONATION -- We were touched to receive the note below last week, along with a generous cash gift.

As the school year winds down, we anticipate that the numbers of guests in the Cafe will increase significantly, since many of the children receive breakfast and lunch at school. In addition, the Food Pantry guest numbers served continue to grow, as economic challenges force many of the residents of our surrounding neighborhood to make difficult choices with their limited incomes.

BOOKS, BOOKS AND MORE BOOKS -- Today, we had the unique opportunity to add an immense amount of books for our Cafe's library, thanks to the wonderful folks at Bookstock at Laurel Park Place in Livonia. With the public portion of the event wrapped up yesterday, today was the day that local nonprofit organizations were given the chance to descend on the event with boxes and bags to fill up on the remaining inventory at NO CHARGE!

Our Library volunteers, Joan and Ray, were joined by Sister Shelley and Executive Director Bob Sadler (who chronicled the experience in photographs) to peruse all the tables and fill two vehicles full of books to bring back to Deo Gratias.

Watch over the next few weeks and months as our library will be blessed with even more variety, including bibles, biographies, histories, cookbooks, self-help and inspirational, and children's books.

MORE EASTER JOY -- While supplies last, children visiting Deo Gratias this week can enjoy special Easter gifts and treats, courtesy of our partners at Gleaners Community Food Bank. We appreciate their generosity toward our younger guests!

SPREADING EASTER JOY - With many local students off for Spring Break this week, Deo Gratias' art room is back for kids looking to make special projects (and give parents a little break!). Volunteer Terry Ahwal hands out supplies and serves as a sounding board for ideas. She'll even help draw something for the littler ones if they just want to color something in.

As you can see, there's a lot of talent coming through these halls, and hopefully their artwork will brighten homes around the neighborhood during this Holy Week and Easter season.

LENTEN FRIDAY LUNCH - Our partners at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen provide the meals served at our Cafe three days a week, and we're grateful to work with them on our shared mission!

Today, their chefs prepared a wonderful salmon croquette served over rice accompanied by cut green beans. It has received rave reviews from our guests!

EARLIER THIS MONTH, a group of students from Franciscan University of Steubenville on Spring Break came to Deo Gratias while in Detroit for the week, and we put these volunteers to work! They worked in our Cafe and Food Pantry, reorganized our inventory of canned goods, mopped and cleaned our art and tutoring rooms, and much more.

All in one day!

We are ever so thankful to these inspiring, Christ-filled young people.

VALENTINE GENEROSITY -- At their recent March meeting, the St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church Knights of Columbus Council #12121 presented a check to Deo Gratias with additional proceeds from their February 7 Valentine's Dinner Dance.

LUNCH WITH CHEF BOBBY, PART XVI -- Yesterday, guests in our Cafe enjoyed a lunch of pasta, eggplant, Italian sausage and dinner rolls from Robert A Nahra, aka Chef Bobby of Hook SCS and frequent appearances on FOX 2 Detroit.

As always, we are thankful for Chef Bobby's generosity, and our guests love it, too!
