This week, our Church 418 family experienced a heartbreaking and unexpected loss.

One of our first members has passed away, and I am deeply saddened.

From the beginning, Christopher Szalai was part of the story of Church 418. He trusted us enough to become part of this church family in its earliest days, and that is something I will never forget.

He was kind. He had a gentle heart, and more than anything, he wanted love and to be loved. I am grateful that, for a season of his life, we had the privilege of loving him as a friend and a part of this church family.

As a pastor, there are people who become more than names on a membership roll. You pray for them. You worry about them. You celebrate them. You carry them in your heart. He was my friend. His loss is one that I feel deeply, and I know many in our congregation do as well.

Today, I am choosing to remember his kindness, his presence, his smile, and the place he will always have in the history of Church 418.

To his family and those who loved him most, please know that you are in our prayers. To our church family, hold one another a little closer and continue to be the kind of community where people know that they are seen, valued, and loved.

You were loved. You mattered to us. And you will be deeply missed.

We will share information regarding memorial arrangements as they are made.

🕊️ REST IN PEACE, DOLLY PARTON 🕊️

Today we say goodbye to a woman whose impact reached far beyond music.

Dolly Parton gave generously to causes that helped children, families, communities, medical research, literacy, and people who simply needed someone to care. Through her Imagination Library alone, millions of children have received free books, giving them something priceless: the opportunity to dream. (Dolly Parton⁠)

But here at Church 418, we also want to remember Dolly for something that matters deeply to us: her willingness to show love and compassion to those who are often forgotten, the LGBTQ+ community.

Dolly consistently spoke about loving people, accepting people, and treating people with dignity. She supported LGBTQ+ people and HIV/AIDS causes at a time when doing so publicly could come with criticism. Her legacy reminds us that kindness doesn’t require us to understand someone’s entire journey—it requires us to recognize their humanity. (Governor of California⁠)

As a church, we believe that Jesus taught us to love people—not to decide who is worthy of love.

Dolly Parton spent her life giving, encouraging, creating, and reminding people to dream.

So today, we honor her life and the good she put into the world.

Rest peacefully, Dolly. Thank you for the music. Thank you for the books. Thank you for the generosity. And thank you for reminding us that kindness can reach people in places we may never see. 🕊️

Did you pray today?

And I don’t mean only when you need something. Don’t let prayer become a list of requests. Take time to thank God when everything is going right, too.

Thank Him for the blessings you asked for. Thank Him for the doors He opened. Thank Him for the peace you have today. Thank Him simply because He’s God.

Sometimes the greatest prayer is not “Lord, I need…” but “Lord, thank You.”

So let’s engage: What is ONE thing you’re thanking God for today?
