Dear community,

We want to share the heavy news that our friend and community member Joe Baker joined the ancestors this morning. He had been living with cancer for over 14 years, but had been relatively stable until a few days ago when his health suddenly and rapidly declined.

His family knew how much St. Peter's meant to him, and I am so grateful that they invited me to be with them this morning as he transitioned. Before he died I was able to offer him a blessing with our healing circle anointing oil and read to him Thomas Merton's Prayer of Not Knowing. He died peacefully surrounded by so much love and care.

We are in the process of making arrangements for a service at St. Peter's, likely in the coming week, and we will keep you all updated as we know more details. And beyond the service, we know we will continue to find ways to honor and remember Joe in our community.

As we hold his family in prayer, I hope we can also hold one another through the grief of this transition. Please let me/us know if you would like to connect for pastoral support.

With deep love,
Kateri

At St. Peter's Episcopal Church Detroit, heating systems from the 1970s were on their last legs—threatening vital programs serving neighbors experiencing hunger and homelessness.

Instead of just patching the problem, St. Peter’s turned failing boilers into a turning point—upgrading their building, cutting energy costs, and deepening their commitment to climate justice and community care.
