In the 1860s, Detroit’s Jewish founders of Congregation Shaarey Zedek purchased the St. Matthew’s Episcopal church building and transformed it into what became Detroit’s first synagogue.

The relationship between our communities was not incidental — it reflected a deeper understanding between two peoples who knew what persecution, exclusion, and displacement felt like, and who recognized the necessity of standing together in uncertain times.

For generations, both African Americans and Jewish Americans have experienced hatred born from ignorance and fear.
We have endured discrimination, violence, restricted opportunity, vandalism, scapegoating, and efforts to erase or marginalize our histories and contributions.

Yet despite those hardships, our communities repeatedly chose resilience, institution-building, faith, education, and collective advancement over despair.

Gun violence is not a partisan issue — it’s a community issue.

Every family deserves safe neighborhoods, safe schools, and safe public spaces. Join us for an important conversation on building safer communities and strengthening democracy.

While Detroit has seen historic reductions in violent crime, far too many families across Michigan and the nation are still impacted by gun violence every day.

Real progress happens when communities, faith leaders, law enforcement, advocates, and elected officials come together to find solutions.
