Our Story
Our Story Pentecostal Spiritual Assemblies of CHRIST - Worldwide “For as I passed by and beheld your devotion, I found an altar with this inscription. TO THE UNKNOWN GOD, whom therefore we ignorantly worship, HIM I declare unto you.” The Pentecostal Spiritual Assemblies of CHRIST, Worldwide, formerly known as St. Matthews Temple of CHRIST – Metropolitan Spiritual Church of CHRIST, is located in the densely populated, inner-city community on Detroit’s east side. The church was organized as St. Matthew’s Spiritual Temple of CHRIST on May 1, 1938. In the Beginning…. It was not an UNKNOWN GOD that was presented to some followers on May 1, 1938, nor was it anything so inveigling as to capture the imagination of the people without a struggle. It was the doctrine of Spiritual Truth, which was unraveling and unfolding greatly in the city of Detroit Michigan. Reverend Arthur Cobb Jr., was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1934 by the late Bishop Wallace Peter Robinson, founder of the Alpha and Omega Spiritual Church of CHRIST in Detroit. Within four years of his initiation into religious life, the LORD blessed HIS people here at St. Matthew’s Spiritual Temple of CHRIST. The origin of St. Matthew’s Spiritual Temple of CHRIST dates back to the first Sunday in May, 1938, founded by the Reverend Arthur Cobb and Madame Mozelle Cobb at 5516 Rivard. The church started with a small group of eight members. From this humble beginning, our church grew and prospered under the leadership of our beloved founder, Reverend Cobb. The mutual love between pastor and congregation enabled us to accomplish seemingly impossible tasks. After a short time we later relocated and purchased the land at 442 Piquette. The spirit of the LORD spoke to Reverend Cobb and declared, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter into the joy of the LORD,” Matthew 25:21. Reverend Cobb, being motivated by impressions from the LORD, in 1957 we later purchased the building at 7237 Harper Avenue; it has become the permanent home for St. Matthew’s Spiritual Temple of CHRIST. Under the leadership and dedication of Reverend Cobb along with Madame Cobb we were able to burn the mortgage on this property. Despite physical limitation, Reverend Cobb served faithfully as shepherd of this flock for fifty years. During his tenure, Reverend Cobb has served as spiritual leader, counselor, teacher, and friend to a countless number of people. Although the responsibility of his position has demanded a great deal of his time, he made himself available to the members of his congregations and others. Reverend Cobb was as a graduate of Detroit School of Divinity, a member of the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of CHRIST, Inc. under the leadership of Reverend Clarence H. Cobbs; a trustee for the Detroit Local Ministers and Laymen’s Council of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of CHRIST, Inc. In October 1988 Reverend Cobb was called from labor to reward. Madame Mozelle Cobb served as Interim Pastor for five months before making her transition as well in March 1989. Que Vadis Domini – “Where do we go from here?” In the spirit of unity and love Reverend George Danley, held the church together until a more suitable candidate for the pastorate was found. In August of 1989 Reverend Robert E. Young was elected to the pastorate and served faithfully for nine years. Reverend Young was most noted as being an inspiration to many especially to those persons going before the Board of Examiners of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of CHRIST, Inc., to receive licenses to preach, teach, prophecy, heal and those going into the missionary field. Reverend Young replaced the seat of Reverend Cobb to sit on the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of CHRIST, Inc. In May of 1998, Reverend Young was consecrated to the Sacred Episcopal Office of Adjunct Bishop for the Third Episcopal Diocese of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of CHRIST, Inc. under the leadership of Bishop William Ozier, Diocesan Prelate. Bishop Young made his transition from labor to reward November 1998. “Also I heard the LORD saying, whom shall I send and who shall go for us? Then said I, here am I; send me.” Isaiah 6:8 After laboring with us upon the transition of Bishop Robert Young, Elder Kevin J. Chambers was elected to the pastorate and installed August 8, 1999 by His Grace, Archbishop Arthur L. Posey, Presiding Bishop of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of CHRIST, Inc., and currently serves in this capacity. This installation would mark the beginning of a new era and bring supernatural order in the church. Pastor Kevin Chambers has been given the task as restorer and repairer of the breach. Pastor Chambers has reformed the choir, which in time past was knows as the Cobb Singers and now known as the Cobb Inspirational Choir, formed the PK’s (Preacher Kids Choir), formed an altar guild, consecrated Trustee Wallace Person and Trustee Charles Mims to the Sacred Episcopal Office of Deacon, and has introduced Intercessory Prayer on a weekly basis. Along with the organizational changes, Pastor Chambers has made Christian Education his primary concern with the introduction of “Journey of a Lifetime” our systematic Bible Study. Pastor Chambers as being led by the Holy Spirit and wanting to intertwine the church with the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of CHRIST, Inc. changed the legal name of the church from St. Matthew’s Spiritual Temple of CHRIST to St. Matthew’s Temple-Metropolitan Spiritual Church of CHRIST. In July 2002 at the 77th Annual Convention of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of CHRIST, Pastor Chambers was elected to the Sacred Episcopal Office of Bishop. On November 8, 2002 at St. Mary’s Temple of Peace (Grand Rapids MI) Pastor Chambers was consecrated to this Sacred Episcopal Office. Bishop Kevin Chambers served as Diocesan Prelate for the Third Episcopal Diocese of the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of CHRIST, Inc. In December 2004, the LORD led Bishop Chambers to change our name to Pentecostal Spiritual Assemblies of CHRIST – International. This name change was birthed out of the need for spiritual oversight and accountability. The Pentecostal Spiritual Assemblies of CHRIST – International is Pentecostal by birth; Spiritual by lifestyle; Apostolic by experience and Christian by demand. And in 2011, our mandate shifted as GOD has instructed us to move beyond being an International Ministry to become focused worldwide. The day of Pentecost was observed in Jerusalem fifty days after the celebration of the Passover, which commemorated Israel’s deliverance out of Egypt. It is significant that this day was chosen by the LORD to begin the fulfillment of Joel 2:28: “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh....” Two baptisms were disclosed on the day of Pentecost. There was a baptism in the Holy Spirit, and in the Apostle Peter's message that followed, water baptism in the name of JESUS CHRIST was commanded (Acts 2:38). This outward, physical baptism mysteriously merges with that of the Spirit, and is the “one baptism” of Ephesians 4:5. This is what JESUS referred to as being “born again” in John 3:3-7. And how wonderful to be born into the family of GOD-changed, transformed, and made a “new creature in CHRIST JESUS.” No, Pentecost is not a denomination. It is a new birth experience. It is primitive Christianity made relevant to today’s world. The people referred to as Pentecostal simply believe, teach, and receive all that transpired on the birthday of the church...Pentecost, 33 A.D. Since the very beginning of Apostle Chambers’ tenure as our pastor, he has encouraged us to “Prophecy to ourselves,” and to use the power of the spoken word… “The words that I speak are my law of good and they will produce the desired results, because they are operated on a power greater than I am…” GOD has blessed us with many rich blessings throughout our history. Through the grace of GOD (Goodness Rendered at CHRIST Expense) we have come this far by faith. Today, we turn our face to the future with hope and expectation. We respond to our history of grace and love with thanksgiving and with faithful loving service. As we continue to write new chapters in this history of GOD’s family at the Pentecostal Spiritual Assemblies of CHRIST – Worldwide, we pray that GOD continues to move by HIS Spirit, and that HE may grant a strong faith to walk with HIM and one another in love. We are striving each day through the teachings and prophetic utterances of Apostle Chambers, our continuance of holding up the blood stained banner for our LORD until HE shall come in the air. Until such time we shall remain: “A Spiritual Church…On a Spiritual Foundation…Walking in the Supernatural…” A Spiritual Church... On a Spiritual Foundation... Walking in the Supernatural "Expect the Great"
