We did it, Detroit! 🏃🏾‍♀️‍➡️🕺🏻

On a rainy Sunday morning, our Cohort Detroit runners laced up and hit the streets for this year’s Free Press Marathon! Despite the rain, our runners finished strong!! Together, we raised over 100% of our goal for this year’s Detroit Free Press Marathon fundraiser!

Huge shoutout to our relay runners, half-marathoners, and especially our alum Olivia Lee, who completed the full marathon! 💪

We would like to give a big thank you to all of you for your continued support ❤️ Your generosity makes it possible for us to continue to help grow the next generation of young leaders across the city! Every dollar raised goes directly to support young adults leading with faith, creativity, and courage in our neighborhoods. We couldn’t do this without you!

Our cohort had such a wonderful time at this year’s Fall Opening Retreat! We spent the weekend exploring what it means to belong in God’s love, and it was truly a beautiful experience.

We kicked things off with pizza, check-ins, and getting settled into our home for the weekend. Our first session invited everyone to share a personal story that shaped who they are today, helping us see and understand each other more deeply.

A highlight was a teamwork challenge where we had to lower a PVC pipe to the ground using just one finger—without losing contact! It turned into a lesson on patience, communication, and slowing down. Just like with God, when we rush the process, we miss what’s unfolding right in front of us.

We also had a powerful session on Dignity, guided by This Here Flesh by Cole Arthur Riley. We reflected on how dignity isn’t earned or given—it’s something we already have as people made in God’s image. Our conversations were honest and vulnerable as we explored how our stories, failures, and communities shape our sense of worth.

Outside of our sessions, everyone spent a lot of time enjoying nature. Some people went on runs, others swam, and we even had a peaceful morning stretch session to start the day. After that, we cooked together and made an amazing taco spread and pancake breakfast. We ended our last night around a bonfire under the stars—laughing, sharing stories, and just being present with one another.

It was such a fun and meaningful weekend, and you could feel how much more connected and excited everyone felt for the year ahead!

We’re back!
This September brought the beginning of a brand new cohort. We kicked things off with our alumni BBQ, where alumni and staff had the chance to fellowship and welcome in our new participants.

It was the perfect way to start our 10-month journey together because we dove right into what it means to truly belong in God’s love. In our first few sessions, we spent time exploring what we need as a group and what lies ahead over the next 10 months. We also laid the foundation for our community’s “river banks,” where we’ll support one another and grow in our shared journey.
But what stands out most is the laughter, joy, and openness this group brings. We are filled with excitement and anticipation for the months ahead!

Here’s to a year full of fun, growth, and deepening connection!!

It’s that time again folks!

We are officially one month away from our biggest fundraiser of the year. On October 19th, we are running the Detroit Free Press Marathon to support young leaders serving all over the city. Your support will impact young adults navigating in challenging spaces, seeking justice, and showing God’s love in Detroit. 100% of your gift will support local leaders serving through Cohort Detroit.

Last year, the funds we raised allowed us to increase in all the ways we serve around the city. We added on our new arts initiative called the 126 project, increased our church outreach, and allowed more space for bigger learning intensives and events!

This year we are seeking to raise $10,000 to support Cohort’s impact in Detroit. Your support and donations go directly to local young adult leaders who serve within our communities.
We included some pics of last year’s race, and some of the cool things we’ve done through the year!

In June, we wrapped up our cohort journey surrounded by so much love and joy ❤️

In our last session, we sat together and mapped out the moments from this past year that shaped us the most. This included powerful readings to deep learning intensives, to key moments spent visiting ministry partners. By the end, we had a river on paper that told the story of our entire 10-month journey.

Our graduation ceremony brought together friends, family, and community to share stories, speak affirmations, and celebrate all the ways God has been moving in and through us during this season.

For our final retreat, we cooked, laughed, ate and reflected on where God might be leading us next by reading and affirming our prophetic imagination projects!

It’s been a rich, challenging, and beautiful year with our 24–25 cohort. We’re deeply grateful for the chance to learn, grow, and walk alongside one another, and we are excited for the work the God is doing in all of us!

Until next time 24-25✌🏾❤️

Recap p. 2!

In May, we explored what it means to have ‘prophetic imagination.’ During our time together, we focused on the prophets and how they called for repentance, advocated for justice, and pointed God’s people towards hope and restoration. They did this by communicating creatively and resisting dominant narratives rampant within the communities they were apart of. Prophetic imagination means to imagine the ways that you’re being uniquely called to do the Lord’s work within your own community.

Our participants got to enjoy 2 events that really brought this learning home. They got to take a tour of Church of the Messiah, where they got an amazing look at all of the work the church was doing within the community. Then, we got to join our friends at the 126 project for Art Night! There, we were able to spend time painting and reflecting on what God’s promises were over our lives.

This month was about leaning into God’s desire for us and how we can contribute to his plan for restoration in our communities. It was so wonderful being able to see our participants dive into all the ways we could use prophetic imagination.

RECAP TIME!

We’ve had a packed spring over here at Cohort Detroit! In March and April we had an amazing time closing out our Justice theme and then exploring what it means to sabbath. Special thanks to Reverend Denise and our friends at Arc of Justice for blessing up with so much great conversation and wisdom during our time together.

During the Arc of Justice tour, we toured several historical landmarks around Detroit that revealed a legacy of resilience, resistance and hope for its citizens. Afterwards, we got to spend time talking to our guides and hear how they navigate racism within church spaces. It was a great time to think, reflect, and enjoy fellowshipping together.

In April, we dove into everything sabbath. This covered sabbath as rest, feasting and play. We learned about what it means to rest well in the Lord despite our busy schedules. We got to bring all this together at our Sabbath retreat! We had a fun improv session lead by Justin D, played games, feasted, and an amazing session with Reverend Denise. All in all, we had a wonderful time❤️

Keep on the look out for our May/June recap coming soon!

Check out another testimonial from one of our current participants, Olivia!
“Cohort Detroit has been super impactful for me this year. It’s been refreshing to be a part of a community that intentionally engages with topics like lament, hope, and justice within the context of our country and our own lives. I have loved building a family with my cohort over weekly dinners and conversations together. I’m a PhD candidate at the University of Michigan researching restorative neural technologies for spinal cord injuries, amputations, and stroke. Justice is a primary lens that anchors my research, as I get to partner with God in his work of healing and restoration of human flourishing. Being a part of Cohort has expanded my view of the gospel, God’s grace, and the extent of his hope for justice in our world. I have gained tools for having difficult conversations, made real friendships with people different from me, and deepened my commitment to bringing God’s kingdom to earth through my everyday life. I feel really grateful for this program and how it’s formed me!”
Stay tuned for another “Testimonial Tuesday” next week! If you or someone you know are interested in learning more about us, DM us before our application deadline on May 24th!

DC PART 2!

The second half of our trip was incredible! We visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture, then spent a meaningful evening with Reverend Dr. Joy and her husband, Brian. We ate, danced, worked on puzzles, and laughed together before having an open and honest conversation about what it means to experience rest and play while processing lament.

We also had the privilege of hearing Mark Charles share his reflections on lament and how it has shaped his faith. Afterward, we took a powerful monument walk, deepening our understanding of history and resilience.

On our final day, we had an AMAZING time with Dr. Joy and Brian at Alfred Street Baptist Church. It happened to be their annual youth-led Black History Month celebration, and we were in for a treat! The performance was inspired by Soul Train and creatively honored historic Black figures through music, dance, and Bible storytelling, making faith and history come alive in such a vibrant way.

We are beyond grateful for the prayers, people, and support that made this trip possible. Through it all, we not only engaged with lament but also experienced the deep joy of being in community.

Special thanks to our guest and friend, Pastor Leon from Mack Avenue Community Church!

We shared so many laughs and meaningful moments as we welcomed him into our cohort space. Pastor Leon offered us a vulnerable look into his journey, sharing honestly about life, ministry, and what it means to care for both family and community as a pastor.

He dropped countless gems on the beauty and challenge of living in true community, and our participants had the chance to engage deeply and ask powerful questions about how this can take shape in their own lives.

We’re so grateful for such an intimate and enriching session that reminded us of the importance of showing up for ourselves, our families, and the communities we’re called to serve.

COHORT TAKES D.C Part 1!

We wrapped up February with an unforgettable trip to Washington, D.C.! This one was truly special❤️

We kicked things off with an amazing dinner, setting the tone for the trip. The next day, we visited the Museum of the Bible, where we got to step back in time and experience what life was like for early Jewish communities. It was incredible to see how they lived and to get a hands-on look at what life might have been like in Bible times.

Later, we visited a local church and met with Reverend Kip. He shared his story with us and gave us a behind-the-scenes look at how his church serves the community through youth outreach, food programs, and more. It was inspiring to see how faith and justice can come together to make a real impact.

And that was just the beginning! Stay tuned for part two to hear about the rest of our amazing time in D.C.!
