MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS:
THE HEART OF LOVE
Each year, the Church invites us to gaze upon the pierced Heart of Christ in the beautiful solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus reveals the very center of who Jesus is: divine love poured out completely for humanity. In every heartbeat of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we encounter mercy, compassion, forgiveness, and faithful love that never abandons us.
The image of the Sacred Heart is rich with meaning. The flames represent the burning intensity of Christ’s love for souls. And no one is excluded from that love. The crown of thorns reminds us of the suffering He willingly endured for the salvation of the world. Yet above all, the Heart of Jesus shines with hope: no wound, no failure, and no darkness is greater than His love; His love endures forever.
Throughout history, numerous saints have found refuge in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque received visions of Jesus in the 17th century, in which He revealed His desire that the world come to know the depth of His love. Jesus spoke of His Heart as one that loves human beings and yet is often met with indifference from the people He loves deeply. His invitation remains the same for all of us today as it was in the past: “Come to Me.”
Devotion to the Sacred Heart offers peace. The Heart of Jesus teaches us tenderness in place of harshness, forgiveness in place of resentment, and charity in place of selfishness. When we consecrate ourselves and our families to the Sacred Heart, we place our trust in the One who can never forsake or abandon us; the One who promised to be with us always until the end of time.
The Sacred Heart also calls us to imitation. If we truly receive the love of Christ, we must become people who love as Jesus loves. We are called to console the suffering, welcome the forgotten, defend the dignity of every person, and bring the compassion of Christ into our homes, workplaces, schools, and communities. The Heart of Jesus is not closed; it is always open. Our hearts must become the same.
As we celebrate this solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and as we consecrate our Archdiocese and homes to the Sacred Heart this weekend, may we continue to trust and rest in the love of Christ. Let us bring Him our worries, our sins, our hopes, and our gratitude. In the Sacred Heart, we discover that we are never alone and never unloved. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Amen.
