Dear Church Family,
Gary Coburn begins a new series examining the “one another” commands of Scripture with Jesus’ command in John 13:34-35 to love one another. Although modern technology keeps us constantly connected, people can still experience deep loneliness—even while sitting in a crowded room or attending worship. Christian community requires more than simply being together; it means allowing others into our lives and making Christ’s love visible through our relationships. Jesus said the world would recognize His disciples not primarily by knowledge, attendance, religious activity, or reputation, but by their love for one another. That love becomes visible through patience, forgiveness, carrying burdens, serving others, staying engaged through disagreements, and loving people even when they are difficult to love. Jesus also establishes the standard: “As I have loved you.” By humbly washing His disciples’ feet—including those who would deny and betray Him—and ultimately going to the cross, Jesus demonstrated a humble, practical, sacrificial love that serves without waiting for someone to deserve it. His call remains: Love one another as I have loved you.

Dear Church Family,
Gary Coburn continues the God Never Said That series by examining the familiar advice to “follow your heart.” While the world encourages us to trust our feelings and desires, Scripture warns that the heart is not always a reliable guide. Jeremiah 17:9 describes the heart as deceitful, while Jesus teaches in Matthew 15:19 that sinful thoughts and actions can come from within it. Rather than allowing emotions or desires to determine what is right, Christians are called to test their hearts against God’s Word and seek His wisdom. Romans 12:2 teaches us not to conform to the pattern of the world, but to be transformed through the renewing of our minds. That transformation is an ongoing process as God shapes us more fully into the image of Christ. Galatians 2:20 describes the surrender at the center of Christian life: Christ lives in us, and we continually yield our will to His. Proverbs 3:5-6 brings the message home by telling us to trust in the Lord with all our heart rather than leaning on our own understanding. Our hearts may sometimes lead us astray, but God knows them completely and continues transforming us through His love, mercy, and grace. The better direction for our lives is clear: follow Jesus, not your heart.

Dear Church Family,
Todd Walker’s sermon, The Character of a Leader: Redefining the Elder, examines spiritual leadership through the character of Christ as the Destin Church of Christ continues its elder selection process. Rather than measuring leaders by the world’s standards of power, position, influence, or achievement, Todd turns to 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 and applies Paul’s description of love to the character of an elder. A godly elder is patient and kind, free from envy and pride, honors others, is not self-seeking or easily angered, and keeps no record of wrongs. He remains anchored in biblical truth while protecting, trusting, hoping, and persevering with those entrusted to his care. Through 1 Peter 5:1-4, Todd emphasizes that elders shepherd God’s flock willingly and eagerly, leading by example rather than lording authority over others or seeking personal gain. No man can perfectly meet this standard through his own strength; ultimately, these qualities point to Jesus, the perfect Shepherd and example of sacrificial love. True Christian leadership is not defined by title or authority, but by a life increasingly shaped by the love, humility, forgiveness, service, and sacrifice of Christ.

Dear Church Family,
Todd Walker’s lesson from Mark 14 focuses on the Lord’s Supper as far more than a weekly remembrance of Christ’s death. As Jesus transformed the Passover into the new covenant, He gave His disciples a continuing way to remember what God has done and that God remembers His people, His promises, and His Word. In the bread, we remember Christ’s body and the sinless life He lived before laying that life down for us. In the cup, we remember His blood and our participation in the new covenant—a relationship that should continually transform us as God pours into our lives. The Lord’s Supper also reminds us of Christ’s kingdom and our responsibility to proclaim His life and death until He comes. That proclamation cannot remain inside the church building. Jesus demonstrated the full extent of His love by taking a towel and washing His disciples’ feet. In the same way, communion should shape how we live, love, serve, and sacrifice for others every day. We remember a God who remembers us, receive His grace, and then carry that grace into the world through transformed lives.

Dear Church Family,

Gary Coburn continues the “God Never Said That” series by examining the familiar phrase, “Everything happens for a reason.” While the saying may sound comforting, Scripture does not teach that God directly causes every event, especially suffering, loss, or evil. God is sovereign, but we live in a broken world shaped by sin, human choices, natural consequences, and real pain. Jesus Himself entered into grief and wept with those who were hurting rather than explaining their suffering away. At the same time, the Bible assures us that God is always at work. Romans 8:28 does not say that all things are good, but that God works in all things for good. Joseph’s story in Genesis 50 shows how God can redeem what others intended for harm. The lesson encourages us to bring our pain honestly to God, look for His hand even when we cannot yet see the outcome, and respond to hurting people with faith, compassion, prayer, and presence rather than empty phrases. We may not understand everything that happens, but we can still trust the God who remains faithful in every season.

Dear Church Family,

This morning at the Destin Church of Christ, Gary Coburn continued the God Never Said That series by examining the familiar phrase, "God just wants us to be happy." While God delights in our joy, Scripture never teaches that temporary happiness is His highest purpose for our lives. Instead, God's desire is to transform us into the likeness of Christ, producing a deeper, lasting joy that remains even through life's trials. Drawing from John 15, James 1, Philippians 1:6, and 1 Peter 1:15-16, Gary explained the important difference between happiness, which depends on changing circumstances, and biblical joy, which is rooted in abiding in Christ. Trials, disappointments, and seasons of hardship are not signs that God has abandoned us, but opportunities for Him to strengthen our faith and shape our character. Rather than asking, "Does this make me happy?" believers are encouraged to ask, "Is God forming something lasting in me?" Lasting joy is sustained by the hope that God is near, God is faithful, God is not finished with us, and God will always keep His promises. The invitation concluded with the reminder that the church is God's support family, helping one another remain rooted in Christ through every season of life.

Dear Church Family,

Todd Walker continued last week's study on loving God by showing what it truly means to love others through the example of Mary anointing Jesus in Mark 14. Building on Jesus' warning in Mark 13 that no one knows when He will return, the lesson emphasized that Christians must remain spiritually alert and faithfully engaged because we do not know when our finish will come. Mary demonstrated the kind of love Christ desires by acting when others stood by, giving sacrificially and extravagantly without holding anything back, gaining spiritual insight through her wholehearted devotion, and setting an example that Jesus said would be remembered wherever the gospel is preached. In contrast to Judas and others who became distracted or complacent, Mary remained focused on Christ. The challenge for every believer is to refuse spiritual apathy, step forward in service, love boldly, give generously, and finish strong so that it may truly be said of us, "He did what he could," as we faithfully await the day we hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Dear Church Family,

Todd Walker's sermon, Are You All In?, centered on Jesus' answer in Mark 12:28-31 that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. He challenged the congregation to make loving God the highest priority of every day, emphasizing that all means complete devotion rather than partial commitment. Drawing from Deuteronomy 6 and Romans 12:1, he encouraged everyone to examine whether they truly love God with conviction, consistency, and visible faith, allowing that love to shape every aspect of life. Todd also explained that God commands us to love Him not because He needs our love, but because He desires what is best for us, blessing those who place Him first. Through a series of personal questions, he urged each listener to consider whether their faith is evident in their conversations, daily habits, relationships, and actions. The sermon concluded by reminding us that when we genuinely love God with our whole being, loving our neighbors naturally follows. The final challenge was simple but powerful: Are you all in? May each of us renew our commitment to love God completely so His love shines through us to everyone around us.
