GOD'S DOUBLE PORTION

Isaiah 61:7: Promises a "double portion" of joy and inheritance, replacing past shame and humiliation.

Zechariah 9:12: Features a promise of restoration, where God declares, "I will restore double to you."

Job 42:10: Illustrates this concept through physical and financial restoration, as God gave Job twice as much as he previously had.

2 Kings 2:9: Focuses on a spiritual blessing, with Elisha asking for "a double portion" of Elijah’s spirit.

Passage Review

Matthew 7:24–29 (KJV): The Wise and Foolish Builders

In Matthew 7:24–29 (KJV), Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount by emphasizing that hearing God's Word alone is not enough; true discipleship requires obedience. Those who hear His teachings and put them into practice are like a wise man who built his house upon a rock. When the rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew, the house stood firm because its foundation was secure.

In contrast, those who hear His words but fail to obey are like a foolish man who built his house upon sand. When the same storms struck, the house collapsed, and its destruction was great.

Jesus ends this teaching by revealing the authority of His words. The crowds were astonished because He taught with authority, unlike the scribes.

This passage reminds believers that life's storms come to everyone. The difference is not the storm but the foundation. A life firmly established on obedience to Jesus Christ will remain steadfast, while a life built on anything else will ultimately fail.

The central truth is this: A strong spiritual foundation is built not merely by hearing God's Word, but by faithfully living it.

James 1:22-25
King James Version

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Matthew 7:24-29
King James Version

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:

29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

FAITH BRINGS JOY

Romans 5
New International Version

Peace and Hope

5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b] boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

Romans 4

The Faith of Abraham

4 Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did he discover about being made right with God? 2 If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God’s way. 3 For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”[a]

4 When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. 5 But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. 6 David also spoke of this when he described the happiness of those who are declared righteous without working for it:

7 “Oh, what joy for those
whose disobedience is forgiven,
whose sins are put out of sight.
8 Yes, what joy for those
whose record the Lord has cleared of sin.”[b]

9 Now, is this blessing only for the Jews, or is it also for uncircumcised Gentiles?[c] Well, we have been saying that Abraham was counted as righteous by God because of his faith. 10 But how did this happen? Was he counted as righteous only after he was circumcised, or was it before he was circumcised? Clearly, God accepted Abraham before he was circumcised!

11 Circumcision was a sign that Abraham already had faith and that God had already accepted him and declared him to be righteous—even before he was circumcised. So Abraham is the spiritual father of those who have faith but have not been circumcised. They are counted as righteous because of their faith. 12 And Abraham is also the spiritual father of those who have been circumcised, but only if they have the same kind of faith Abraham had before he was circumcised.
