The Ache That Points to Life - by Pastor Mark Lovato

Have you ever looked at the world around you and felt a deep, quiet ache? Maybe it is a broken relationship, an injustice in your community, or simply the sense that things are not the way they should be. That feeling can be exhausting. It can make you want to shut down or look away. But here is the truth: that ache is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It is a sign that something is alive in you. Jesus speaks directly to this in Matthew 5:6. He does not tell the hungry to quiet down or pretend everything is fine. He calls them blessed. He sees the longing and honors it. That is remarkable. The God of the universe looks at your ache and says, "I see it. And I am in it." Spiritual hunger works the same way physical hunger does. It signals life. It signals that you were made for something more, and that more is the righteousness of God, both in your own heart and in the world around you. You do not have to have it all figured out today. You just have to be honest about what you feel. Let the ache be real. Let it remind you that God is still at work, and that He has placed that longing in you for a reason. You are not broken for caring. You are alive.

God Sees What No One Else Does

Joseph did everything right and still ended up in prison. That is one of the most honest and difficult parts of his story. He honored God, he fled temptation, He protected His integrity, and Potiphar's wife lied about Him anyway. The reward for doing the right thing was a false accusation and a prison cell. If you have ever done the right thing and paid a price for it, Joseph's story is for you. Doing right does not always lead to immediate reward. Sometimes faithfulness costs you something real. A relationship. A promotion. Your reputation. It can feel deeply unfair, and that feeling is valid. But the story does not end in the prison cell, and neither does yours. God saw Joseph in that cell. He had not forgotten him, and He was already working. The faithfulness Joseph demonstrated in Potiphar's house prepared him for what was coming next. Every quiet act of integrity was building something that no one around him could see yet. God sees you too. He sees the temptation you resisted when no one was watching. He sees the choice you made to do right even when it cost you. He has not forgotten you, and He is not finished with you. Stay faithful. Stay humble. Keep running toward Him. Your story is still being written, and God is the one holding the pen.

Run. Do Not Negotiate.

When Potiphar's wife grabbed Joseph's cloak, he did not stop to weigh his options. He did not try to let her down gently or linger to explain himself. He left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house. That is it. No negotiation, no hesitation, just movement in the opposite direction. Paul echoes this exact strategy in his letter to Timothy. Flee. That is the instruction. Not resist from a comfortable distance, not manage the situation carefully. Flee. Bible language for run. There is a reason God does not tell us to stand our ground against sexual temptation the way He tells us to stand against other spiritual attacks. Some battles are won by staying and fighting. This one is won by leaving. The wisest thing you can do when temptation is close is to put as much distance between yourself and it as possible. That might mean changing your route home. It might mean putting a filter on your phone. It might mean being honest with a trusted friend about where you are struggling. It might mean not being alone with a certain person. These are not signs of weakness. They are signs of wisdom. You do not have to prove you can handle it. You just have to run. And running toward righteousness is just as important as running away from sin. Keep your eyes on what you are running toward.

Count the Cost Before the Moment Comes

Joseph did not wait until Potiphar's wife grabbed his cloak to decide what he was going to do. He had already made up his mind. When she first approached him, he had a clear answer ready. He knew what was at stake, and he named it out loud. He would not betray his master, and more importantly, he would not sin against God. That kind of clarity does not happen in the heat of the moment. It is built beforehand. One of the most practical things you can do as a believer is think through your convictions before temptation arrives. What will you do if that situation comes up at work? What will you say if that conversation goes in the wrong direction? What is your plan if you find yourself somewhere you should not be? Deciding in advance is not a lack of faith. It is wisdom. Sin rarely announces itself with a warning label. It usually shows up dressed as something reasonable, something small, something that feels like it will not matter much. But sin has consequences that stretch far beyond the moment. It is never free, and it never stays hidden forever. Today, take time to think honestly about where you are most vulnerable. Make a decision now, before the pressure hits. That decision, made in a quiet moment with God, could protect everything that matters to you.

You Are Not Alone in the Fight

Let's be honest. We live in a world that makes sin look appealing and resistance look foolish. Temptation is everywhere, and it does not take a break. If you have ever felt the weight of that pressure, you are not alone. Even people who love God deeply face moments where the pull toward sin feels overwhelming. But here is the encouraging truth: falling is not inevitable. Joseph's story proves it. He was far from home, surrounded by a culture that did not share his values, and targeted relentlessly. He had every excuse to give in. But he did not, because he was not relying on his own strength. He stayed close to God, and God stayed close to Him. The enemy wants you to believe that you are too weak, that everyone gives in eventually, and that your situation is unique. None of that is true. God's power in you is greater than any temptation you will ever face. You were not designed to white-knuckle your way through life alone. You were designed to walk with God, and that changes everything. Today, take a moment to acknowledge where you feel the pressure most. Bring it honestly before God. He already knows, and He is not surprised. He is ready to help you stand.
