Our church's backpack ministry is preparing for the new school year, during which volunteers provide supplemental weekend food and snacks for 10 students in need at North Elementary School. First Congregational Church and several other Des Plaines organizations work with the Community Backpack Project (CBP), an outreach program of the Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines, which is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Elementary students in Community Consolidated School District 62, who are identified through school social workers, can take home a backpack full of food to last through the weekend. The CBP operates throughout District 62. For further information or to arrange a donation, contact CBP coordinator Jana Haas at 847/951-5111.
