Thirty years after The United Methodist Church established the Order of Deacons, the vocation continues to shape how the church serves beyond its walls through its estimated 1,100 ordained members. Approved by the 1996 General Conference, the order created a permanent ordained ministry centered on Word, service, compassion, and justice, affirming a lifelong calling distinct from Elder ministry.

Thirty years after the creation of the Order of Deacons, United Methodist leaders reflect on a ministry of service, compassion, justice, and connection.

The United Methodist Council of Bishops is taking steps to address the climate crisis in a new training course titled “Speaking Up for Climate Action,” specifically designed for United Methodist episcopal leaders. In doing so, the United Methodist Creation Justice Movement says, the bishops are preparing to take a leadership role in protecting and healing our relationship with God’s good creation.

Lorna Wilson was in her 13th-floor office in the World Trade Center’s North Tower on Sept. 11, 2001. The United Methodist was among the employees who escaped that day as firefighters were rushing in. She promised God that if she survived, she would dedicate her life to serving others. That decision led her to become a Sunday school teacher at Faith United Methodist Church in Staten Island and expand the church’s food pantry.

“I promised God while I was in that building that if you save me, I will serve you,” said Lorna Wilson, who escaped the North Tower on Sept. 11, 2001.

A United Methodist pastor was among seven faith leaders arrested Sept. 4 for blockading the entrances to a Vermont building where workers help immigration agents target their efforts. The clergy insisted their faith compels them to oppose President Donald Trump’s ongoing mass deportation campaign. “I think it is imperative on me, as a faith leader, to proclaim that human beings are not targets and that God is a God of justice and of love,” said the Rev. Rebecca Girrell.
