The Knights of Columbus was formed in 1882 to render financial aid to members and their families. The Knights has grown to more than 15,100 councils and 1.9 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico

, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam, Saipan, Lithuania, Ukraine, and South Korea. In 2015, the Knights of Columbus set a new all-time record for the 17th consecutive year. Our charitable donations increased to a new total of $175,079,192. In addition, we achieved our highest level of charitable service in 2015, volunteering more than 73.4 million hours of service worldwide. Dave Borgemier recently led a Knights of Columbus poster contest at St. Mary's. There were two age groups and a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner in each group. The winners received a gift card as a prize.

Today the St. Mary's Knights of Columbus completed this year's "Winter Weather Wear" drive as winter began to show its face across Central Iowa. We are once again in awe of the graciousness of our parishioners. We sorted over 220 coats in addition to a wide variety of hats, caps, mittens, gloves and boots. Some of the items were new along with some previously owned items.

JOPPA, St. Joseph's Shelter, Catholic Charities of Des Moines and Johnston Partnership were the recipients of the winter weather garments.
