Registration for our Faith Formation classes are still open! Faith Formation is available for all youth ages 2 through High School. We have an engaging year of programming planned, and we hope you and your families take the opportunity to be involved!

Last Sunday, we celebrated the start of the new school year with our annual Backpack Blessing. Our youth beginning school this week gathered as the congregation prayed for the new school year, asking for God's love and care over children, parents, teachers, school staff, bus drivers, and all who play a vital role in nurturing our youth.

To serve as a reminder of God's love, each student received a tag for their backpacks. Didn't get one? Don't worry--we will be passing these out to students during the next few worship services for those not available last Sunday!

Last Sunday, our congregation had the joy of sending Scott Magnuson into an exciting new chapter of his faith journey as he prepares to begin his studies at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. During worship, members of the congregation gathered around Scott, laying hands on him as we prayed God's blessing upon him and gave thanks for the many ways he has already enriched the life of Capitol Hill Lutheran Church. We celebrated his call to ministry and asked God's Spirit to guide, strengthen, and encourage him throughout his years of study and formation. While we will miss Scott's presence among us, we rejoice that God continues to raise up leaders for the Church, and we look forward to seeing how God will continue to work through him in the years to come.

As we begin to prepare for a new Liturgical Year, CHLC would like to invite you to a new event that is being held to enhance the life of our music and worship here at Capitol Hill.

On Sunday, August 30th, we will be holding a Music Retreat immediately following worship from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. The hope of this retreat is to offer any member of our congregation the opportunity to experience the community of musicians that work to serve this congregation each year through their time and talents.

If you are interested in joining, please check your emails for more information, as well as an RSVP to join. Food and childcare will be provided during this event. We hope to see you there!

🎉 Welcome, Ellen Rothweiler! 🎉

Capitol Hill Lutheran Church is thrilled to welcome Ellen Rothweiler as our new Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministry!

Ellen is a Des Moines native who grew up in ELCA congregations, graduated from East High School and Grand View University, and brings nearly 20 years of experience in children, youth, and family ministry throughout the greater Des Moines area.

When asked about her passion for ministry, Ellen shared:

"I have a passion for the church and the ways in which it can be a safe and supportive community for children, youth, and families, especially those who may find themselves on the margins."

Ellen lives in Pleasant Hill with her husband, daughter, one dog, and one cat. She loves gathering people around the table, smiles quickly and often, and is excited to get to know the people of Capitol Hill.

She also shared these words that beautifully capture the heart of her ministry:

"I believe in the power and gift of grace, and want others to know that gift and experience the love of God through my ministry."

We are grateful that God has led Ellen to CHLC and can't wait to begin this new season of ministry together. Please join us in welcoming Ellen, praying for her as she begins this new chapter, and introducing yourself when you see her in the weeks ahead.

Recently, our Clothes Closet was featured on We Are Iowa Local 5 News, where a partnership with local business Amour has resulted in nearly 100 bras being donated. This impactful donation ensures families in need will have not only a quantity, but a quality of these seldom donated items.
