The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. Psalms 103:8

God delights in showing mercy; He takes no pride in anger or wrath. This is why He chose to sacrifice His son, for us, instead of pouring His wrath of our sin, on us. Even in His anger, God would come to the Israelites' rescue when they called on Him for help – no matter what they had done. God has always intended on being gracious – from the very beginning – and He will never change.

Dear God, I thank you that I am a recipient of Your mercy and Your grace. Father, my life would have been over without Your love. Thank you for finding us, all humankind, to be worth the sacrifice; it is something I pray that we never take for granted. You are amazing, God. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Matthew 7:3-5

It can become very easy to point out other people's flaws and shortcomings, instead of focusing on the areas in our lives that require improvement. Jesus spoke against this behavior, adamantly. As Christians, we aren't to be self-righteous, seeking to point out other people's mistakes and becoming blind to our own. We are to be humble – even when correcting people – and realize that just as someone has made a mistake, we are very capable of doing the same thing.

Dear God, I pray that I will never become the type of person who takes delight in pointing out people's flaws. I know that I have my own things I need to deal with and I will never compare my problems with someone else's problems. I pray that I may be loving in times where I need to correct someone, always remembering that no one is perfect and we are all overcoming issues in our lives. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

And the priests and the Levites purified themselves, and purified the people, and the gates, and the wall. Nehemiah 12:30

After a long, hard struggle, the walls of Jerusalem had finally been rebuilt by Nehemiah and the remnant of Judah. But before the dedication ceremony for the wall, the priests and Levites who would lead in it made themselves ceremonially pure. And they also purified the people who attended, and the walls, and all the gates of the wall.

Teach me, Lord, to be pure. Especially before some work I endeavor to do for You or afterward to celebrate it, but not only then, but every day. I know You use clean vessels to accomplish Your work. None of us are without sin, but You always work in a man before You work through him. Prepare me for Your work, Oh Lord. Amen.

And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart. 1 Samuel 12:20

After the people of Israel had sinned and asked for a king that they might be like all the other nations, instead of rejoicing that Jehovah-God was their king, the Lord sent a thunderstorm that made them afraid. They feared because they had asked for a king. But Samuel assured them they must continue to follow the Lord even now that he had given a king to be over them.

Oh Lord, there are times when we commit some great sin or make some wrong choice in life that has an effect on the rest of our lives. We may fear You will not be with us anymore. But we know that if we follow You now from where we are at, and seek forgiveness for past wrongs, You will forgive us and lead us. Amen.

Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God. Luke 12:8

There is an old distinction between "profession" and "confession" which seems to apply here. To profess is to simply make a claim with your mouth to be a Christian; to confess is to give witness from the heart of what you know to be true. Those who confess Christ and are not afraid to do so before other men, will have their reward from Him.

May I make a true and sound profession, Lord, of Your Person, Your work of salvation, and of all You have done for me personally in my life. May I never deny You, never be ashamed to testify for You before men. Amen.

All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:27-28

To whom does Jesus give "rest?" To those who are burdened down with their load of sin and who, however much they may labor to keep God's Law, cannot do so. Jesus gives rest to the sinful soul, even the most vile of all men, if only it rests in Him.

We know, Lord, You have said that there is no peace for the wicked (Isaiah 48:22). And what is peace but rest to our souls? But those who cease from their own works and rest in You find true peace. You bid us be busy at work, Lord, but in the midst of activity for Your glory, You bid our hearts rest at peace on the merits of Your Son. Amen.

Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened. Zechariah 11:17

Here and in verse 16 just before, we see God giving Israel over to the rule of a careless shepherd (king). This shepherd would do them harm and not good. They had rejected Jehovah-God as their Shepherd-king, and now they were given another shepherd whom they would chafe under.

Oh Jehovah my Shepherd, You are the Good Shepherd whoever cares for His sheep. Help me to follow and trust You not only in the green pastures but also through the valley of the shadow of death. No other shepherd can compare to You, Lord, and we, Your sheep, flee from the voice of strangers, for we know only the voice of our true Shepherd. Amen.

The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish. Proverbs 10:28

The hope of the righteous man will be fulfilled, and he will rejoice. But the wicked man's hope shall be cut off forever. Those whose hope is in the Lord shall not be disappointed, but hopes founded on our own will or desires apart from the Lord's will, cannot ultimately endure.

Oh Lord, my hope is in You alone. Let all of my hopes be founded upon Your promises and on Your clear leadings in my life. If you put a good desire in my heart to serve You in a particular way, may that hope not perish if it is truly found to be Your will. But let me not make the transient treasures and pleasures of this life my hope. Amen.
