Thank you to all our volunteers for your efforts and resources for our 2024 CROSS Outreach 32nd annual BACK TO SCHOOL GIVEAWAY. Last month’s work from generous and committed volunteers created two fun, productive and exciting evenings, and included 90 volunteers!

Our ninety volunteers quickly and efficiently sorted and packed 1,600 backpacks of school supplies, toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste, books and information which were then distributed to area school kids aged Head Start-Senior High School! (400 backpacks for Head Start-2nd Graders; 400 backpacks for 3rd-5th Graders; 400 backpacks for 6th-8th Graders; and 400 backpacks for 9th-12th Graders).

Filling 1,600 sturdy backpacks with age and grade-level appropriate school supplies represents an increase of 400 filled backpacks more than we distributed in 2023! We were able to increase the number of backpacks given to children in need this year because of your committed and generous donation to CROSS Outreach Back to School Giveaway.

In other words, we could not have done it without you!

FIFTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION!

Five years ago, First Arabic Presbyterian Church (FAPC) made history by becoming The Des Moines Presbytery’s first congregation of Sudanese/Arabic-speaking individuals, and its first new church to be chartered in nearly 30 years. PC(USA) Stated Clerk J. Herbert Nelson, who was present on that historic day in 2017, described it as a “hallelujah moment,” and indeed, it was!

In June, First Arabic will welcome the Rev. Dr. Nelson back to Iowa as the congregation hosts a special celebration for its fifth anniversary. Please join us Sunday, June 5, at 4:00 p.m. at Cottage Grove Church, 1050 - 24th Street in Des Moines, for a joyful worship service with Holy Communion, uplifting music, and Dr. Nelson as guest preacher. The service will be presented in both English and Arabic.

Following worship, all are invited to stay for a time of festivities that will include sharing, singing, food and fellowship. Please join us on Sunday afternoon, June 5!

Friends of the Arabic Outreach Center are invited to stop by our table at Central Presbyterian's Holiday Market this weekend (Friday & Saturday, Dec. 3-4) for some yummy holiday treats! The Arabic Outreach Center will be selling “SNAX IN SACKS” to support our outreach programs. Stock up on cracker snacks, trail mix, and cookies – perfect for hostess gifts, or for the whole family! The Holiday Market address is 3829 Grand Avenue in Des Moines.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Join us Saturday, August 28, at 2:00 p.m. for SUPER SWEET SATURDAY, a fundraiser for the Arabic Outreach Center. The event will be held at the Cottage Grove Church, 1050 - 24th Street in Des Moines. Admission is just $10/person ($80 for a table for eight). Activities will include sweet refreshments, live auction and sale of desserts, inspiration stories, musical performances, and more.
