During a stellar eight-decade career, Cloris Leachman worked with top Hollywood actors and directors, but she never forgot Des Moines and let us never forget her. In 2009, she was honored by being inducted into the Des Moines Roosevelt High School Hall of Fame. Rest In Peace.

Amid concerns over the increased spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Polk County, I announced today the City of Des Moines will extend the freeze on permits for public events and activities through July 1.
For the health and safety of employees and residents, the City is also extending the closure of its administration buildings until June 15.

“I would like to encourage residents to use good judgment when making decisions about attending large gatherings and encourage everyone to continue practicing social distancing. Adhering to both recommendations will assist in slowing down the spread of this highly contagious disease.”

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie is urging the city’s businesses, churches and event planners to consider canceling large gatherings.

Residents spoke and we listened - the single largest Capital Improvement Plan in the history of Des Moines. We are also allocating $3 million a year for sidewalk repairs near schools and priority traffic routes. Keep sharing your thoughts.

With increased streets funding, there will be more street work and closures, which can cause headaches for Des Moines drivers.
