Who, or what, are you serving? The choices we make are not merely expressions of who we are. Over time our habits shape who we become. Paul introduces a sobering reality: everyone serves something. We may not think of ourselves as slaves, but whatever consistently commands our obedience begins to shape our character, our relationships, and our future. Today’s question isn’t whether your life is being shaped by something. Our question is: Who, or what, is shaping you?

Some of us have spent years believing that a particular sin, failure, or pattern is simply part of who we are. We’ve tried to change, failed again, and eventually settled for the thought, “This is just me.” But Romans 6 offers something better than resignation. Because we are united with Christ, our past no longer defines us, sin no longer owns us, and change is actually possible. The work of Jesus doesn’t just forgive your old life; it gives you a new one. God’s Grace doesn’t just change your standing; it changes your relationship with sin.

We all know what it feels like to be defined by our worst moments. We feel haunted by a failure we can’t undo, a mistake we can’t forget, or a pattern we can’t seem to break. Romans 5:15-21 reminds us that Adam’s failure may explain our ruin, but it does not have the final word. Paul repeatedly points us to something greater: God’s grace is greater than our sin, Jesus’ righteousness is greater than our condemnation, and grace can reign where sin once ruled. Grace gives us something greater.

What does the cross tell me about how God feels about me when I am at my worst? Romans 5 reminds us that God’s love wasn’t attracted to us at our best. It moved toward us at our worst. Paul doesn’t simply tell us that God loves us, he tells us when God loved us. Not when we were strong. Not when we had cleaned ourselves up. Not when we were looking for him. “While we were still weak…”, “While we were still sinners…”, and “While we were enemies…”.

Most of us know what it feels like to lose our peace when life gets difficult. When we face uncertainty, disappointment, and suffering, we wonder, “Where is God in this?” Paul reminds us that the gospel doesn’t promise a life without trouble, it gives us a new way to walk through trouble. Because we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God, we stand in His grace, and we have a hope that suffering cannot destroy.
