SERMON NOTES FROM SUNDAY’S SERMON: OVERCOMERS (John 16:25-33)

On Sunday, we looked at one of Jesus’ teachings on the night that He would be betrayed. These verses are among His final words to His disciples, giving them and us great comfort. He will show us our Loving Father, His Lifelong Presence, and the Lasting Peace that we have through Him - overcoming all tribulation.
I. LOVING FATHER vs.25-28
A. Figurative Speech vs 25
25 "These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.
The disciples were unable to comprehend Jesus' words, especially concerning His impending death. Jesus said plain talk would come later (through the Holy Spirit). Looking at Peter’s statements before and after Jesus’ resurrection, we see this in his words; before: trying to stop Jesus’ death: Matt 16:22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!" And after: “He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you 21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” (1 Peter 1:20-21))
B. Jesus Would Not Pray To The Father For Us vs. 26
26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you:
This sentence, left alone, would cause fear and doubt to attack the minds of the disciples and all of us today, but praise God that sentence is followed by clarification. After His death, God the Father would be able to accept us into His presence because our sin and guilt would be paid for (Heb 10:12-14 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.) No one can come to God for us… not a parent, pastor, or priest. (John 14:6 "No one can come to the Father but by Me.")
C. The Father Loves Us vs. 27
27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God
The Father loves us because we love Jesus and because we believe He came from the Father. No one is needed to speak to a Father who loves you. We need to remember that Jesus is the only mediator between God and us. (For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. (1 Tim 2:5-6)
D. Jesus Returning - He now intercedes for us vs. 28
28 I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father."
Jesus has always existed just as God has always existed (John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.) Returning to the Father allowed Him to intercede for us. (Heb 7:25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.)
II. LIFELONG PRESENCE vs. 29-32
A. Disciples Now Claim Understanding vs. 29-31
29 His disciples said to Him, "See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.31 Jesus answered them, ‘Do you now believe?’”
Jesus' question tells us they don't really understand. Saying we understand doesn't make it so. They could not understand until the Holy Spirit taught them the truth. They did understand He was the Messiah, they just didn’t know why He came
B. Deserted But Not Alone vs. 32
32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
They would be scattered – all would run during the arrest in the Garden. They would return to their home, which they had left to follow Jesus. They would not stay together as a group, at least not for a while; Jesus would be left alone PHYSICALLY, just as the high priest on the Day of Atonement. (Lev 16:17 There shall be no man in the tabernacle of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out…) But look at these words again: “Yet, I am Not Alone - the Father is with Me!” Physically deserted but not totally - God would be with Him! We too have such an assurance: "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” (John 17:20-21)
III. LASTING PEACE vs.33
33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
A. Spoken To Have Peace
All these teachings of Jesus are given for our peace. He never promised us peace from difficulties, but peace through difficulties. Anyone can have peace when things are good; God's peace remains in the bad times also because our trust is not in our circumstances but in Him.
B. In The World - Tribulation
No one is promised to have only good all their life… this is a firm promise - you will have tribulation. But that tribulation is in the world not with God or your spiritual life.
C. Be of Good Cheer!
In the midst of the tribulation, not after you are rescued! (James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.) This does not mean to be happy when difficulties come, but to be of good cheer, for you have a promise that you will be an OVERCOMER through Him, because as Jesus said, “I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD!” (1 John 5:4-5 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?)

To be an Overcomer, you believe Jesus died, was buried, and rose from the dead, then accept Him as your Lord and Savior, confessing you are a sinner, asking for forgiveness, inviting the Holy Spirit to enter your life, and surrendering your life to Him.

Zech 3:1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, "The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?"

God had caused King Cyrus of Persia to send Jewish leaders back to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple, which had been desolate for 70 years. Now, due to persecution, the work has been stopped for 15 years. Zechariah, along with Haggai, is a prophet sent by God to encourage them to return to rebuilding the temple. Joshua is the high priest sent to reestablish worship in Jerusalem, so Satan stands against him, trying to keep him from conducting the work God has sent him to perform. But he doesn’t have to defend himself… the Angel of the Lord does that for him, rebuking Satan as he stands against God’s man. That Angel of the Lord is the Preincarnate Jesus, and just as He rebuked Satan for standing against Joshua, so will He do for you. Why? You, too, are a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9) sent to fulfill God’s plan. This is absolutely awesome! When you feel like you are under attack from Satan or his emissaries, picture Jesus standing in front of you, rebuking him for daring to attack His brother/sister. Then, by faith, give God praise for His love and protection.

The blues. Ever had them? Sure.
You're not sad. You're not depressed. You're not angry. BUT, there is an absence of joy that just makes you feel -- well, blue!
We can blame the devil because he's really good at keeping us "off our game" but more often than not, it's simply life that can do it to us. Even the strongest, most surrendered believers can get "downcast and disturbed" and not have a clue why. The solution? As always, "God".
God’s word tells us how to defeat and even prevent the blues.
"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." Philippians 4:8. Together with our Verse of the Day, when we praise our great God and focus on His goodness, mercy, and love, we will praise our blues away. We simply cannot stay downcast and disturbed when our focus is on all the things God has done for and promised us.

2 Peter 1:2-3 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue…

Grace and peace be multiplied… what an awesome blessing from Peter to those who read this epistle. How do we receive this blessing? Through the knowledge of God and Jesus’ divine power. Notice both God and Jesus are included in his phrase “His divine power”… why? Because Jesus and the Father are one (John 10:30). What does His power give us? Life and godliness through our knowledge of Him in all things. We are not limited by our human nature, that divine power of God and Jesus our Lord gives us “all things that pertain to life and godliness”. Paul gave us the same promise: “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.” (2 Cor 9:8 ) Now that is worth praising God for. With grace and peace given to us through God, we should look at our world today, regardless of what our eyes see, and shout out loud, “Look out, world! Here I come, propelled by the knowledge of Jesus Christ! Let’s give Him praise today because of this wonderful gift.

Prayer and power.
I believe as Christians, we often get confused about prayer. We fall sick or run into financial or other devastating problems and we cry out to God for help. But, we see no positive results. It's as if God never heard. We claim scripture that says "ask anything in my name and it will be given to you" (John 14:13) but still no apparent answer. Many will look at us and conclude we simply didn't have enough faith. We may get convinced of the same. But, what about Paul, the greatest missionary to walk the face of the earth? Did he lack faith? The one God chose to write about faith more than any other? Did he fail to ask to have his thorn in the flesh removed in the name of Jesus? Of course not! Paul understood what John explained in one of his letters. God ALWAYS grants our request when we ask according to His will. 1 John 5:14-15. If we ask for something that God knows is not best, His answer will be "No!" But, His reason and purpose is for the good of the Kingdom and ourselves. That, is the power of God. He is sovereign. Nobody can make or force Him to do anything. Yet, because of His unlimited and immeasurable love for us, He will move mountains to help us if necessary.
Our problem is we often fail to see the mountain move because we're too busy wiping tears from eyes because we didn't get our prayers answered!

Daily Walk Sunday 5/31
John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

It’s the last night Jesus would spend with the disciples, that very night Judas would betray Him, and His journey to the cross would begin. He had just told them, again, that His death was imminent and that they would be scattered. They did not understand, even though they declared that they did, Jesus asked the question, “Do you now believe?” This was not an actual question, because He knew they did not yet understand, and because of that, they would all forsake Him at His arrest that night. Today’s verse is an encouragement to them and to all of us. Difficulties will come into our lives, but the good news is He has overcome the world. In my message today at Texas Avenue Baptist in DeRidder, I will preach a message titled “Overcomers,” covering not only these words but those that precipitated them. This is not a command from God for social justice as many left-leaning folks would argue. But, don't ever think God does not promote and even demand social justice. James writes that pure religion is "to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." James 1:27.
What God demands and the essence of His instruction to the people through Isaiah in today's passage is OBEDIENCE. God hates fake worship. He hates when religion becomes our god. In verses 13-15 He tells us: "Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me.
New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations — I cannot bear your worthless assemblies. Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening."
God wants our surrender and complete obedience. He knows our hearts and can smell deceit and insincerity from heaven! Either we surrender ALL to Jesus or we have no surrender. The choice is ours as it was with the children of Israel. We can obey our rules, regulations, and tradition or we can obey God!

Daily Walk Saturday 5/30
Ps 4:8 I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Yesterday, we saw that the Lord would always hear the prayers of those living godly lives and seeking His help. David confirms that truth in verse three: “But know that the Lord has set apart for Himself him who is godly; The Lord will hear when I call to Him.” With this knowledge, he tells us that living such a life allowed him to sleep peacefully even when his enemy pursued him. Why? The Lord keeps us guarded. In another of David’s Psalms, he emphasizes that fact, “The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him and delivers them.” (Ps 34:7) Just as the Lord was guarding David, He is there for us also, if, like David, we place our trust in Him. Need that peaceful rest, trust the Lord with all your heart and close your eyes… rest in on its way.

What a warning! What an indictment! What an encouragement! What a blessing!
The good, the bad, and the ugly!
This incredible teaching of Jesus was to us as individuals and to the church. I'm headed to the burn clinic at Lourdes this morning to hopefully have heavy bandages removed after getting severe contact dermatitis last week resulting in second degree burns on my lower legs (hint: AVOID poison sumac!). After contacting something I should not have, my skin was damaged and horribly ugly blisters formed. Through the treatment process, that damaged skin had to be removed so that new healthy skin can take its place. I cannot get well until; 1) the offending agent (poison) is removed; and 2) the damage it caused is cut away making way for new growth. It's certainly not pretty or pleasant but absolutely essential. Holding on to the poison or the damaged flesh will prevent my healing and cause more damage.
So it is with sin in our lives and/or sin in the church. It is the poison that can eventually kill a person or church if allowed to go unattended. It will not stop until it runs its course. James 1:15:
"Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."
The sin in our lives/church must be identified, extracted, and removed permanently if we ever want to be healthy and productive for the Lord.
Get rid of the bad and the ugly!! It won't be pretty or pleasant but it is essential!!

Daily Walk Friday 5/29
Ps 66:17-20 I cried to Him with my mouth, and He was extolled with my tongue. 18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear. 19 But certainly God has heard me; He has attended to the voice of my prayer. 20 Blessed be God, Who has not turned away my prayer, Nor His mercy from me!

The Psalmist gives us instructions for receiving answers from God. The first thing to receive God’s answer is to ask for His help. That is our responsibility, even though we know He knows everything; we must ask. But, as we ask, we are to be praising Him (extolled). If all we do is ask, ask, ask and never give Him praise, we are unlikely to be heard. Asking is important, but it must be accompanied by living a godly life.

He will hear His people who are clean before Him, because He has “unfailing love” for us. Now, look at those last words… He will not turn you away and will not hold back His mercy. Need help from Him? Confess any known sin to Him and get clean because just like we do not give our disobedient children the things they want, neither will He. Now, if you are clean, ask Him and thank Him in advance for what He is about to do. Not clean? Now is the time.
