SERMON NOTES FROM SUNDAY’S SERMON: OVERCOMERS (John 16:25-33)

On Sunday, we looked at one of Jesus’ teachings on the night that He would be betrayed. These verses are among His final words to His disciples, giving them and us great comfort. He will show us our Loving Father, His Lifelong Presence, and the Lasting Peace that we have through Him - overcoming all tribulation.
I. LOVING FATHER vs.25-28
A. Figurative Speech vs 25
25 "These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.
The disciples were unable to comprehend Jesus' words, especially concerning His impending death. Jesus said plain talk would come later (through the Holy Spirit). Looking at Peter’s statements before and after Jesus’ resurrection, we see this in his words; before: trying to stop Jesus’ death: Matt 16:22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!" And after: “He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you 21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” (1 Peter 1:20-21))
B. Jesus Would Not Pray To The Father For Us vs. 26
26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you:
This sentence, left alone, would cause fear and doubt to attack the minds of the disciples and all of us today, but praise God that sentence is followed by clarification. After His death, God the Father would be able to accept us into His presence because our sin and guilt would be paid for (Heb 10:12-14 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.) No one can come to God for us… not a parent, pastor, or priest. (John 14:6 "No one can come to the Father but by Me.")
C. The Father Loves Us vs. 27
27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God
The Father loves us because we love Jesus and because we believe He came from the Father. No one is needed to speak to a Father who loves you. We need to remember that Jesus is the only mediator between God and us. (For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. (1 Tim 2:5-6)
D. Jesus Returning - He now intercedes for us vs. 28
28 I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father."
Jesus has always existed just as God has always existed (John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.) Returning to the Father allowed Him to intercede for us. (Heb 7:25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.)
II. LIFELONG PRESENCE vs. 29-32
A. Disciples Now Claim Understanding vs. 29-31
29 His disciples said to Him, "See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.31 Jesus answered them, ‘Do you now believe?’”
Jesus' question tells us they don't really understand. Saying we understand doesn't make it so. They could not understand until the Holy Spirit taught them the truth. They did understand He was the Messiah, they just didn’t know why He came
B. Deserted But Not Alone vs. 32
32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
They would be scattered – all would run during the arrest in the Garden. They would return to their home, which they had left to follow Jesus. They would not stay together as a group, at least not for a while; Jesus would be left alone PHYSICALLY, just as the high priest on the Day of Atonement. (Lev 16:17 There shall be no man in the tabernacle of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out…) But look at these words again: “Yet, I am Not Alone - the Father is with Me!” Physically deserted but not totally - God would be with Him! We too have such an assurance: "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” (John 17:20-21)
III. LASTING PEACE vs.33
33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
A. Spoken To Have Peace
All these teachings of Jesus are given for our peace. He never promised us peace from difficulties, but peace through difficulties. Anyone can have peace when things are good; God's peace remains in the bad times also because our trust is not in our circumstances but in Him.
B. In The World - Tribulation
No one is promised to have only good all their life… this is a firm promise - you will have tribulation. But that tribulation is in the world not with God or your spiritual life.
C. Be of Good Cheer!
In the midst of the tribulation, not after you are rescued! (James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.) This does not mean to be happy when difficulties come, but to be of good cheer, for you have a promise that you will be an OVERCOMER through Him, because as Jesus said, “I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD!” (1 John 5:4-5 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?)
To be an Overcomer, you believe Jesus died, was buried, and rose from the dead, then accept Him as your Lord and Savior, confessing you are a sinner, asking for forgiveness, inviting the Holy Spirit to enter your life, and surrendering your life to Him.
