27 Day after Pentecost 2026

“I wonder how we will fare?” I asked myself. Mark, my brother, and I were so different. Mark was a genius of a mechanic; not just cars, but tractors and anything mechanical. The world Mark would live in was so different from my pastor’s world. The differences never divided us. We loved each other until Mark’s final breath.

How was it that two brothers, so different, loved each other? We ate many meals at our table. We laid underneath many cars, changing brakes, water pumps, and CVC joints. We appreciated our family, our different skills, and our loving Lord. We lived in unity.

Psalms 133 is a very short psalm, three verses. It celebrates families, friends, and strangers getting along: “How very good and pleasant it is when kindred people live together in unity!” The Bible says without flinching, “Love one another.” The Bible without hesitation tells us to “welcome one another” – differences and all. The Bible looks forward to a day when people “from every nation, language, and tribe will follow Jesus the Lamb, and Jesus will wipe away every tear.” That is what I am looking for, a new heaven and a new earth.

This is our prayer today.

Gracious Jesus, You are the Good Shepherd. You laid down Your life so we would live, we who are so different. You loved each of us, warts and all. Gracious Jesus, break down the walls of hostility between us. Our jealousies take them away. From our hatreds wash us, make us clean. From our insecurities, let us grow up. Let us love each other for our different gifts. Make us one new people. Let us follow Jesus. Let us be filled with Your Spirit. Let us look for the new heaven and new earth You are building. Let us follow You. This we pray in Jesus’ name amen.

Psalms 133:1:

“How very good and pleasant it is when kindred people live together in unity!”

Song for reflection is “Make Me a Servant.”

“This Is My Father’s World” Hymn 143

Verse 1
This is my Father's world, and to my list’ning ears
All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father's world, I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas– His hand the wonders wrought.

Verse 2
This is my Father's world, the birds their carols raise;
The morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker's praise.
This is my Father's world, He shines in all that's fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass, He speaks to me everywhere.

Verse 3
This is my Father's world, O let me ne'er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet.
This is my Father's world, the battle is not done;
Jesus, who died, shall be satisfied, and earth and heav’n be one.

21 Day of Prayer after Pentecost

I was known as the statue when I played baseball, because I would not swing the bat. I have thought about my childhood and baseball many times. I believe the reason I did not swing the bat was I feared failure. That fear froze me in a bad place.

Fear took away my power to swing the bat. Fear caused me to have a self-hate. I could not love who I was. Fear robbed me of the self-discipline that leads to better achievement.

Today we will pray about our confidence in Christ.

This is my prayer today:

“You are our Confidence. You are the Rock of our lives. You are the Strong Tower. We run to You when we are afraid! Gideon was afraid he would never make a decent living. The competition was too great. Midians were always taking his profit. He was depressed. Maria was depressed. She had lived with disease for 18 years. She could do nothing. Jarius was depressed. His daughter was ill. It appeared that she would die. Gideon, Maria, and Jarius are us. Fear grips us. Loss seems to be on the horizon. There is no immediate hope. We are stumbling in the darkness. Yet, You did not leave Gideon in his depression. You visited him. Come gracious Spirit visit us in our offices. Those places where we hide from our Midians. Come Gracious Spirit speak to us. Remind us that we can live. Fill us with Your presence so we will have confidence to live. Come Healing Spirit, let us touch the hem of Your garment in our doctor’s office. Let us experience Your healing flow throughout our bodies. Let us rise from our sick beds. Let us believe. Come Resurrecting Spirit, raise us from our deaths. Awaken us from our nightmares. Let us recover from our bankruptcy. Let us become people of hope. Give us power to live. Give us the love to care. Give us the discipline work in the best way. Come be our Confidence. Be our Rock. Be our Strong Tower. This we pray in Jesus’ name amen.”

This prayer is based on 2 Timothy 1:7.

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
