Tomorrow, June 7 at 9am and 10:15am in person and online, we kick off our June sermon series Flooded: Living a Life of Service (using inspiration from Noah and the movie Evan Almighty) and launch our church-wide 5,000-Hour Summer Service Challenge. Our goal is to collectively log 5,000 hours of volunteer service between now and August 1. The focus on serving is important to the DNA of Woodlawn UMC, as our mission statement is to be the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus! Serving others is one of the essential practices of our discipleship pathway.
We are starting this journey by looking at what it takes to actually begin: answering God's call, no matter how crazy it looks. In Genesis 6:13-22, God gives Noah a wild, logic-defying assignment: build a massive ark on dry land. We see a modern, humorous take on this in the movie Evan Almighty, where God (Morgan Freeman) commands Evan (Steve Carell) to build an ark, leaving his career, colleagues, and family looking on in total confusion and mockery. Weโll see a short clip from the movie in the in-person worship service (those watching online will not be able to see the short clip due to copyright laws), but if you would like to watch the entire movie yourself, we will have a few copies of the DVD for you to check out from the church office.
Like Noah and Evan, true service starts when we prioritize God's assignments over the applause of our culture. Kingdom-focused service often requires us to step out in radical faith without knowing the full outcome right away. Our 5,000-hour goal might seem massive, but every great build starts with a single step of obedience.
We will also have our Snowball Mountain Challenge VBS registration/volunteer Kick-off and want to remind you of the road construction on Kay Street!
