First Universalist Parish of Derby Line, Vermont

First Universalist Parish of Derby Line, Vermont We are a welcoming congregation! The building of Derby Line’s first church, the Universalist, was started in 1839 and completed in 1840.

For about a year preceding the building of this church, service was held in the Scott Tavern and conducted by Rev. Norman Camp from Burlington. In 1871, the building was placed on a stonework foundation. The bell, cast in 1873, was hung shortly thereafter. In 1888, the seven large stained glass windows were installed. Finally, the historic tracker organ, which is still in use today, was placed in

the front of our sanctuary in 1892. Upon completion of the church edifice, subscribers met and the pews were sold at auction, $1,556 being realized from the sale. Pewholders, who represented several different denominations, then cast votes to see what denominations could supply the pulpit. The Episcopalians, having paid the most for their pews, were given first choice and Rev. Camp remained until 1842.

Title: Activating the Healer Within

Synopsis: Elliot is a native food enthusiast, and can find edible wilds everywhere he goes. In this reflection, he will share some of his wild food insights (how to identify different plants, how to harvest, and tasty ways to include them in meals) as well as dabble into the ayurvedic principles of food to help us all flourish from the inside out.

From Elliot: "We all have an inner physician whose job is to guide us to finding the healthiest version of ourselves. This is a puzzle with many pieces, all of which we can find when we know where to look and how to listen. It is time for humanity to remember this truth.
I will offer teachings on whole foods and herbs, body psychology, connection to nature, fasting and detoxification, addiction, prayer, and overall transformation".

Bio: Elliot Cluba is a Vermont-based naturalist, herbalist, and primitive skills instructor. Based out of the Montgomery area, he is the owner of Herbs and Arrows, an educational program focused on ancestral earthcrafts and wilderness survival.

Title: Earth Day and Arbor Day: Holidays of Great Importance

Synopsis: This coming week includes two of the most important "holidays" of the year: Earth Day and Arbor Day. Ed will reflect on both with us; provide a smidgeon of history with an underpinning of science and why these two dates are so important. As Edward Abbey said "Sentiment without action is the ruin of a soul".

Bio: Ed Nilson has happily embraced the ethic of being a "tree hugger" after working for the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in Montana, Idaho, and Washington. He put himself through college fighting forest fires and leading research studies in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. Ed's most recent conservationist venue was protecting wetlands nationwide in Washington, D.C. for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

Title: Money and Morality
Synopsis: Do you agree that money and the quest for wealth, in itself, is not moral or amoral? Does how you obtain your wealth affect how you use it? Does the intention behind its use control the narrative of its impact? Does having money bring a moral responsibility to those who hold it? We will ponder these questions and more in an effort to understand how money and wealth can challenge, intertwine, and align with our UU values.
