I have recently been asked: Why are there certain headstones in the cemetery that bear dates that are older than the creation of the Green Cemetery. This is how it all started. In 1886, Lewis Green purchased a two-acre property on Egg Harbor Road in Deptford Township from Joseph W. Dopson for $100. This would become part of the Green Cemetery. Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Woodbury, now Kemble Memorial United Methodist Church had been using the land as a graveyard since 1858. After Green's initial purchase, he bought two other tracts in 1886 which together would form a 21-acre property. Collectively, this land became the Green Cemetery the following year.

FYI - the grass was cut by a lawn service this week. My understanding is this will be the last cut of the year. If you plan to organize work parties, you should do so now. Staying ahead is easier than waiting until it is knee high. Dense areas that were cleared last year are growing back. It isn't easy to maintain with a mower and once again requires a brushhog and other heavier equipment. Be sure to communicate with the trustees if you plan to help at this property.

Update: June 20, 2020 - the place continues to worsen, and now a family is forced to care for their loved ones resting place. This is unforgivable on the part of the people now in charge. I will be coming back with my equipment after work this evening to do what I can to lessen the pain. Please call the trustees (609-424-9550) and inquire as to why they have allowed this scared place to return to a disgraceful condition. In addition, complaints to the State Cemetery Board are warranted.

Update: June 11, 2020 - If you are not aware, the cemetery is in the hands of a new board of trustees. I discuss this more below and in my prior posts. Please scroll through this page from its start to see the efforts taken during the last 2 plus years to bring this place back to better health. It is important to see the transition through to last December, and to see it today.

From what I saw on my first visit in 2018 to what was accomplished in 2 years was truly miraculous. There were helping hands that answered the call, donating their time, tools, material and labor from the goodness of their hearts. There was steady progress and new tasks taken on each day. Goals were being set and goals were being met. Meanwhile, in the background, a storm was brewing. Complaints were filed with the State stating that the property was not being managed well and that there were many things not being addressed. The long list included the poor condition of the wrought-iron perimeter fence and public sidewalk along the highway. Other complaints were frivolous and some not true, as to say that the lawn was not cared for is a crock of crap. These complaints spun off into legal actions and finally a court decision and appointment of a new board of trustees, with the leader being the initial complainant. I expressed my feelings to this individual, stating that had there been better communication and less finger-pointing, we could have all worked together to do even more to bring the cemetery back into full function.

I knew that the new group bit off more than they could chew. The work that was done under my watch was intense. The hours each week spent to keep up with the grass and to continue pushing into the remaining overgrown areas was very demanding. To think that this could be done without the support of volunteers at the level that was being put forth is crazy. To date, since the takeover, the grass has been cut once buy a paid lawn service. It was stated on the cemetery billboard that the property would be cut 4 times this year. Based on the dates posted, the second cut was missed and the next one is not until the end of June. Meanwhile, the properties radiance continues to fade as the grass grows tall and w**ds and tree saplings take over again. The dropped tree limbs and other debris just lays there now. And as you pass by, the curb side view is not inviting.

The new board of trustee’s mission statement is: “Restoring Dr. Green’s Vision”. Based on what I saw today, this is a punch in the gut for the families and friends of those buried here and for the volunteers that worked so hard to actually restore this sacred place. Sadly, it will once again be called a disgraceful.

I hope and pray that the new regime can find a way to address the immediate issues soon and that their plans begin to come together. This place deserves better.

As promised, I have been keeping an eye on the cemetery and watching the progress or lack of by the new trustees. At this moment, my mind is reeling as I looked over the current condition of the property this evening. Having voluntarily cared for this place during 2018 and 2019, there was always steps forward as we cut the lawn regularly and continued pushing through the areas that were thick with vines, ivy and stumps. Today, the cemetery is looking more like it did before I got involved. I am heartbroken for the plot owners, families and friends that may have felt hope over the last few years and now see things going back to how they were. I may be wrong, and there may be some miracle in the works, but I'm not seeing it. I know what it takes to manage this site. We can only pray that the trustees have better things in store very soon. Unfortunately, reading the post on the entrance message board says it won't be well cared for for quite some time. This property requires steady maintenance or nature will take it back. The trustees need to do more than meet and discuss. There needs to be a hands on effort by all to get things in order. My bitch right now is, had there not been a stink made about less important issues and then legal actions taken that caused undo stress and waste of time and money, I would still be doing what I could to keep this scared place in respectable condition. I was not part of the legal matters, but was surely affected by them. My last time to actually work here was on December 28. I had heard that there was going to be a change of the guard, and reached out to communicate. There was little to no response for months. I could only assume that my work was done. Because of these things, I had to redirect my energy and change my Springtime plans. Green Cemetery was no long on my schedule. Eventually, conversation came much too late. I was told that the new team was advised to not discuss the matter and I was left in the dark. I have since made commitments elsewhere. I advise the plot owners and families of those resting here to contact the new trustees to discuss how they plan to keep the place looking as good as it did last year. Their phone number and address is below. If you need a reminder of all the work that was done by my team, please look through the many posts that I have shared here since my first taking on the project.

Special Message: After nearly 2 years of voluntarily caring for the Historic Green Cemetery, I am happy to announce that the property is now being managed by the newly established Green Cemetery Trust. This went into effect on February 19, 2020. It is my understanding that the property is now being maintained primarily by paid services. My physical involvement will cease as I move onto other projects. However, I will remain in communication with the trustees and visit the property often, as my interest in the cemetery's success will never fade. Thank you so much to those that helped individually and during work parties and to those that supported the efforts in returning dignity and beauty back to a rundown, nearly forgotten sacred place. My best wishes to the new trustees and the many plot owners. If you have any questions, you can contact the Green Cemetery Trust at: P.O. Box 431, Thorofare, NJ 08086 or call: 609-424-9550

The work continues through the Winter. Today, I was able to clear an area that was still over grown, and then ventured across the entire property with my newest toy; a cordless reciprocating saw with a limb blade. What a tool it is. I filled the trailer up 3 times with all that I hacked up. It was a good day with lots of fresh air. As always, I invite you to join me here in this effort to keep this scared location in the best of shape.

Beat the rain today. Quiet as can be here. Broke out some lighter tools and cleared the brush and vines from the family plots of friend James Wilson . I'll be back the next dry weekend to continue with cold weather clean up. Maybe you can join me. Regarding James; he is a wonderful person; with the deepest of roots in our area. His connection with the local family cemeteries is vast, including the Chew's, Driver's and Eastlack's.

Update: September 08, 2019 - It was a nice day at the cemetery. Caught up with Todd Boyer, as he has been voluntarily cleaning the older marble head stones across the property. The results of his work are very nice. Today, Debbie and I were able to mow and tidy up the Founders and the A section. Enjoying seeing the steady improvements at this special place.

Was looking forward to this weekend. Glad to be able to spend time here. Didn't think that I'd be raking, but couldn't leave the rows of cuttings out there. Could have used a hay baler. Missed my helper today. Hoping to organize a work party this month. Let me know if you're interested. Always a good time.

Debbie and I spent the day here. Managed to push through Sections B, C and D with our mowers, w**d wacker and w**d killer. Even tried the home concoction that contains vinegar, epsom salts and dish soap. Thinking about moving on property in a tent and become the resident caretakers. Wouldn't that be cool?! Very peaceful and scenic here. Always grateful to have my partner with me. We did good today. Be back tomorrow for a few hours in the morning. Stop by and say hello.

Update - July 13, 2019: The place looks great, having had a very successful work party today. I (Jeff Gellenthin) would like to thank volunteers: Bob Pierson, Debbie Gellenthin, Tom Dunn, Jeff Schroy, Joe Griffin and Bob Hoffman for their time and energy. This is what it takes to keep such a large, non-funded cemetery in good order. Hope to see you the next time around.
