The Listening continues! Yesterday evening at Denver Red Shield, collaboration was more than a word. It was the work. 🤝 ❤️

Our Community Listening Session was full of challenging, thoughtful, collaborative conversation as we listened to people who care deeply about the history, present, and future of DRS.

We were grateful to hear perspectives from voices including the former DRS Center Director Coach John Bailey, former Denver City Councilwoman and National Salvation Army Advisory Board Member Elbra Wedgeworth, Reverend Leon Kelly, Noonie King, Doretta Tootle of Thelma's Dream, Quincy Wedgeworth of RiskTakers Worldwide and Natasha BarShalom White with Winning Wednesdays and Elijah with The Greater Influence (TGI).

Different experiences. Different perspectives. One shared desire to see Denver Red Shield continue to be a place that serves this community well. ❤️

We believe the future of DRS will be strongest when it is built with the community, not simply for the community.

🎉 Today we officially welcomed Joey Zumaya as our new Corps Assistant at Denver Red Shield! 🙌🔥

Joey joins us through the Intermountain Division Pathways Program, a developmental ministry program for those prayerfully exploring a call to Salvation Army Officership. He has already jumped in and been hard at work! 💪

This summer, Joey served as the Recreation Director at High Peak Camp, and prior to that he served as the Corps Assistant at the Grand Junction Corps. He is prayerfully hoping to enter training at Crestmont College in 2029 as he continues discerning God’s call on his life. 🎓🙏

Joey is a passionate percussionist, singer, and lover of youth ministry, and we believe God has brought him to Denver Red Shield for a season such as this. ❤️🥁🎶

We’re excited to watch him grow, build meaningful relationships, develop as a leader, and glean what it means to become a well-rounded Salvation Army Officer.

What a meaningful day at the Denver Red Shield! ❤️🛡️

Today we had the privilege of welcoming former Denver Mayor Michael Hancock back to DRS to meet with our new Corps Officers, Center director, and help strategize next steps for the future of the Red Shield.

For Mayor Hancock, this place is personal. As a young person, he played football and participated in recreation programs at DRS, attended The Salvation Army’s High Peak Camp, and most importantly, met Jesus through the ministry of the Red Shield. 🏈⛰️🙏

A big part of our conversation centered around something that has always been at the heart of DRS: access. Every child and family should have access to quality sports, recreation, mentorship, and community regardless of what they can afford. We talked about how DRS can continue to innovate and remove barriers so that finances never determine whether a young person gets the opportunity to play, belong, grow, and discover their potential. ❤️

Mayor Hancock’s own story is a powerful reminder of why that matters. You never know what God might do with a young person who is simply given an opportunity and welcomed through the doors.

We ended our time together by praying over the future of DRS. 🙏 We believe the same God who has provided incredible programming and ministry here for generations is the same God who will lead us forward, doing exceedingly more than we could ever ask, dream, or imagine! (Ephesians 3:20)

🛡️ Honor the legacy. Remove barriers. Innovate for the future. Keep pointing people to Jesus.

The story of the Denver Red Shield is still being written. 🙌❤️

Boom! The neighborhood squad came through again! 🎉 Our Blessed Box was emmmmmpty yesterday, but today a superhero neighbor swooped in and filled it up with these awesome grab-and-go bags! What an amazing community, right? Thanks, neighbor! 🙏
The Blessing Box is for sharing non-perishable food with neighbors in need. Stop and grab what you need or fill it up with what you have. 👍

Recovery begins long before the fire is over.

As firefighters continue working to contain the Aspen Acres Fire, The Salvation Army is serving alongside our partners by providing hot meals, supporting Recovery Assistance Centers, and participating in long-term recovery planning.

Recovery is already underway. It means showing up every day—for families, first responders, and communities—as they begin the long road ahead.
