The wisdom of the mystics is a gift to us in these days. Julian of Norwich is one such mystic, whose radical trust in the Divine sustained her through some of the most devastating days Europe's history. Today we consider the gospel through her eyes.

The Christian faith has never been just sitting and waiting for Jesus to do all the doing. Jesus calls, invites, and entrusts us with the ministry of love - not all on our own, but with an Advocate, the Spirit of truth. It's an incredible thing, really, for the Almighty to not be about power-over but rather, about a powerful call to "Come, do as I do. Love as I love." We're in this together.
Come and worship. Come as you are.

It is so easy, in these days, to carry anger and bitterness over the state of things. It happens to me all the time. It's a state of mind and spirit that can weigh so heavy and eat away at us from the inside out.
When I think of Jesus as The Way, it means a way that doesn't give all my energy to the drama that wants to make me bitter. It means keeping my gaze fixed on what is bigger than all the nonsense. We don't ignore the nonsense, but neither do we let it run the show in our hearts and minds.
We belong to the One who is Love. Let us remember today and as often as necessary to turn our gaze back here.
Love is stronger than death and the death-dealing ways of this world.
Come and worship. Come as you are.

This is the day the Lord has made!
Today we give thanks to God for the gift of the earth and recommit ourselves to caring well for it.

"Earth Day" by Jane Yolen

"I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.
Each blade of grass,
Each honey tree,
Each bit of mud,
And stick and stone
Is blood and muscle,
Skin and bone.
And just as I
Need every bit
Of me to make
My body fit,
So Earth needs
Grass and stone and tree
And things that grow here
Naturally.
That’s why we
Celebrate this day.
That’s why across
The world we say:
As long as life,
As dear, as free,
I am the Earth
And the Earth is me. "

The Road to Emmaus.
This Easter story shows us how to be there for each other in our grief, listening and being present. This is how Jesus meets the disciples on the road. They don't recognize him, and yet they are comforted. Of course, that's only the beginning of the story. When it's the disciples' turn to listen, and then share a meal with this stranger, they promise the feared was not real has been kept. The empire, which appeared to take down Jesus as it had taken down so many others before, is powerless against the One who is love. Thanks be to God.
Come and worship. Come as you are.
