"The earth is what we all have in common." -Wendell Berry

We begin the Season of Creation at Messiah this morning. Let's begin by thanking the earth for all the ways life she provides to us. The planet nourishes our body, mind, and spirit in countless ways. We are a part of creation, too, of course. We tend, we give back, we take seriously the role God has given us as stewards. We neglect this role at our peril.

*All month, we'll take action on behalf of creation as part of God's Work Our Hands. Today we write congress about preserving the Endangered Species Act and other land and water protections.

Come and worship. Come as you are.

"Bless those who persecute you... love your enemy... never avenge yourselves..."

It's fascinating to consider how the Christian calling is one we can't actually fulfill - even if we're really good at doing good. If we were to have an annual job review, would we "meet expectations," or always fall short? Which can sound discouraging, I realize, but on the other hand, we belong to Christ, who makes all things possible - even in and through us. There's a lot to hold together for people of faith. In the end, we trust the One who loves and forgives and does on the cross what we won't ever pull off on our own - taking the violence of the world upon himself - and forgiving it. God's grace cannot be destroyed or taken away. Thanks be to God.

The disciple, Peter, is not exactly reliable when it comes to following Jesus. If you give him the keys to anything, it seems just as likely that he'd lose them as not. But Jesus says he will give him the keys to the kingdom and he will be the rock on which the church will be built. What could go wrong?
So does Jesus just choose poorly? Or - What is he up to?
The church that continues to this day will wrestle with that question this morning.

Come and worship. Come as you are.

The time a nameless Canaanite woman took on the Holy for the sake of her daughter.
Some of my favorite stories from scripture feature the demanding faith of the least likely, saying to the Holy, "I know who you are and what you can do. I need you. Please help. Have mercy."

Today we have one of these stories, and Jesus seems blown away as well. The Canaanite woman, who has no business approaching him, demands healing for her daughter. It is brave. It is powerful. And we are witnesses to what "great faith" looks like.

The kingdom of heaven is like...
Matthew's gospel tells of Jesus listing the mustard seed, yeast mixed in with flour, a treasure in a field, a pearl of great value, a net cast into the sea, catching all kinds of fish.
No matter which parable speaks to you, one thing is clear: The kingdom of heaven is valuable beyond measure, it is at work even when you cannot see it, and it will cost you everything to participate in it fully.
Today we welcome Pastor Chris Davis from the staff of our Rocky Mt Synod, who will preach and teach on this gospel and what it means for us as we share the gospel in this current moment.
Come and worship. Come as you are.

Today we gather around the Taizé liturgy, with ample silence between scripture, prayer, and simple song. This service is an opportunity to quiet the heart and mind and simply be in God's presence with intention.
It's also an opportunity offer prayers for all that weighs on us in this moment, with an extended "open space" time for just that.
Do something good for your spirit and for this world today.
Come and worship. Come as you are.

A little about this Sunday's worship service...
During Pride month in our nation, we at Messiah join our voices to the celebration. This Sunday, our worship will include the voices and reflections of young q***r folks and young allies who were surveyed by our RIC Team. The theme of the service is titled, “Promises fulfilled and new ones made here at Messiah!”
If you're curious about the title, you will understand once you hear what they had to say. A member of our RIC Team asked if we might ask youth about their lives in the current political climate and what it meant for q***r and allied kids - a great question and a vital idea…
So, before we wrote anything based on our experience, we listened (the youth ranged in age 14-24), asking what it was like growing up in the last decade, as a q***r kid or an ally. Come hear the hope and joy they have to share as we worship this Sunday.
Thanks be to God for all those God calls beloved - and for the opportunity we have to accompany one another.
