TODAY! VJN Equip: Online Training Wed March 11, 5pm EDT.

Compassion and mercy are key Vineyard values. These gifts teach us about God and direct us toward people he loves: the marginalized, the weak, the stranger, and the vulnerable. God's compassion directs us to care for the most vulnerable people involved in the complicated issue of immigration: kids. Many children from immigrant and refugee families have loved ones at risk of deportation. For these children, immigration enforcement operations in a community can pose a risk to mental health and development. Simply put, these kids are scared and need God's love to be secure. Fortunately, supportive adults in a child’s life can play a large role in protecting children’s mental health, promoting positive development, and having kids know their sacred worth in God. The Church is full of these adults, and we want to provide training for the Vineyard in order to love kids well whether they are in our churches, our schools, or our wider communities.

This training offers concrete strategies that adults can use to support children during periods of uncertainty and fear. Drawn from the field of developmental resilience science and informed by clinical practice, these strategies leverage ordinary resources around a child — most importantly, the presence of caring adults — and can be applied by anyone in service to children, including parents, kids' ministry leaders, teachers, and community leaders. Attendees will learn skills for communicating with children about immigration enforcement, restoring predictability and safety, promoting agency, and, most importantly, listening well and letting kids know that God is near with lots of love and care.

This training will be led by Hopewell Hodges, a Ph.D candidate at University of Minnesota. She serves as a leader at the River Heights Vineyard in the Twin Cities, and she has been in the Vineyard since she started college in New Haven, CT. This training is co-sponsored by Vineyard USA Evangelism and Justice, the Hispanic Association, and Vineyard Justice Network.

VJN EQUIP: In light of MLK Day last week and the increased tumult in our own country, we are challenged to put into practice the ways Dr. King fought for justice in Jesus’ name. The context of the world in his time is not too different from our own. Division, violence, and increasing hopelessness. Many people are questioning if peace can work as a strategy. Some people can look leadership from the Church in this hour. What can make a difference? One core discipleship strategy for the Church then and now is the work of nonviolence, the commitment towards love in the face of hate, and peace in the face of conflict. In previous years we’ve hosted webcasts examining the formational elements of nonviolence and practical steps of a nonviolent campaign.

This year, we are returning to the basics of the visionary principles of nonviolence. If you’ve ever wondered what nonviolence is, how it’s connected to Jesus’ Kingdom message, or even what it has to do with the Vineyard, this six-week cohort is for you. Whether a pastor, leader, or congregant, we want to invite you to a transformative journey to get closer to Jesus as you follow the call of scripture “to turn from evil and do good; [to] seek peace and pursue it.” (Proverbs 34:14).

Beginning Friday, February 6 at 12pm EST, we will learn from Josh Williams, Associate National Director of Evangelism and Justice and a few other pastors and leaders from Vineyard USA and some of our partner organizations. We’d love for you to join us!

What a gift to officially launch the and Churches of Restoration cohort! We spent today sharing hearts, learning, and dreaming together. This marks the beginning of a year-long learning community where 7 Vineyard churches will receive monthly coaching from A Rocha staff to implement environmental projects and invest in spiritual formation and moral imagination of our local churches. May this year sow deeply into our movement for stewarding God’s creation!

Immigration Resources

We know many immigrants call the Vineyard home, including some of our pastors. God calls us all to love immigrants. Scripture says, “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 19:34) But how do we apply this command from scripture in our challenging political climate where domestic policies are changing rapidly, and our noncitizen brothers and sisters are more and more afraid?

We do not seek to make empty partisan political statements. Instead, we seek the Lord for wisdom and courage to be obedient as we love the vulnerable in our midst. World Relief, the humanitarian arm of the National Association of Evangelicals (of which Vineyard USA is a part), is leading the way with dynamic resources to equip you, your church, and your community.

Please take advantage of the resources on their Immigration Hub, including sermon series, Bible studies, “know your rights” documents, information about “ICE sensitive locations” policy changes, and more. Stay tuned for more support and guidance coming from our Vineyard family. Note: While we partner with WorldRelief, please be aware that Vineyard USA did not create these resources.

Jesus, help us love your people - ICE agents and immigrants alike.

“Look around you: Everything you see is God’s—the heavens above and beyond, the Earth, and everything on it. But it was your ancestors who God fell in love with; he picked their children—that’s you!—out of all the other peoples. That’s where we are right now.

So cut away the thick calluses from your heart and stop being so willfully hardheaded.

God, your God, is the God of all gods, he’s the Master of all masters, a God immense and powerful and awesome. He doesn’t play favorites, takes no bribes, makes sure orphans and widows are treated fairly, takes loving care of foreigners by seeing that they get food and clothing.

You must treat foreigners with the same loving care— remember, you were once foreigners in Egypt.

Reverently respect God, your God, serve him, hold tight to him, back up your promises with the authority of his name.

He’s your praise! He’s your God! He did all these tremendous, these staggering things that you saw with your own eyes.”

In the wake of MLK Day, we are challenged to put into practice the ways Dr. King fought for justice. One core discipleship strategy for the Church was the work of nonviolence, the commitment towards love in the face of hate, and peace in the face of conflict. In previous years we've hosted webcasts examining the principles and steps of nonviolence, and this year we will be digging a little deeper as we host a five-week cohort on “Formation & Nonviolence” which focuses on the ten practices of spiritual formation and nonviolence.

Beginning Friday, February 7 at 12pm EST, we will learn from various pastors and leaders from Vineyard USA. We'd love for you to join us!
