“Once, we helped immigrants because they were Jews. Now, we help immigrants because we are Jews.” — Rabbi David Saperstein

This line resonates to my core. I’m not worried about Jewish survival — I’m committed to Jewish purpose. Our tradition calls us to compassion, justice, and love for the stranger. That’s the Judaism I live. That’s the Judaism I choose, every day.

At the Pico Union Project, I believe we made a difference this past month. We did not stand idly by. Our outcry was heard.

We were once strangers -always neighbors. This is who we are.

Join us on Sunday, August 6th at 10:00 am in Washington Park. Choose one of two groups: either plan to walk the park or to learn canoe safety and steering a canoe from Licensed Voyager Michelle Zelinger. The water group can also choose to rent pedal boats - splitting fees and rotating crafts will make this an inexpensive and fun venture!

Everyone – plan to meet near the rental boat house on the grass by 10 am. If you are planning to canoe or pedal boat, bring $20 cash – rental fees will vary depending on the size of our group. Walkers are free! No need to RSVP! Just bring water, sunscreen, a hat, a snack to keep up your energy – and if in the water sports group, a towel and cash.

Washington Park is located at 701 South Franklin - best to park near the Recreation Center or on the east side of the park to easily reach the boat house. Questions? Contact Michelle Zelinger.
