Revelation 8:1-13 The Trumpet Judgments

Revelation 8 King James Version
1 And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.

2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.

3 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.

4 And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.

5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Revelation 8:1-5
This presents a powerful and symbolic depiction of the opening of the seventh seal, the preparation for divine judgments through the sounding of trumpets, the significance of prayers in the spiritual realm, and the unleashing of God’s judgment upon the earth. This passage underscores the themes of divine sovereignty, the importance of prayer, and the certainty of God’s righteous judgments. It serves as a reminder for believers to be vigilant, prayerful, and prepared for the ultimate fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan for the world.

Revelation 8:6-13
A depiction of the opening of the seventh seal in Revelation 8:6-13 sets into motion a series of powerful events signifying God’s judgment and the beginning of the end times. This passage describes the seven angels who are given trumpets to sound, each heralding a new calamity upon the earth. These trumpet judgments are a part of the larger series of judgments that occur throughout the book of Revelation, often referred to as the “Seven Seals,” the “Seven Trumpets,” and the “Seven Bowls.”

The sounding of the first four trumpets in this passage is particularly devastating, as they bring about destruction upon the earth, sea, rivers, and heavenly bodies. The imagery of a third of the earth being burned, a third of the sea turning into blood, a third of the rivers being poisoned, and a third of the sun, moon, and stars being struck, all evoke a sense of widespread and indiscriminate calamity. These events are meant to serve as a wake-up call to humanity, a clear sign of God’s judgment and a call for repentance.

The mention of the eagle flying in midair and pronouncing woes upon the inhabitants of the earth is symbolic of impending doom and serves as a warning of the severity of the upcoming trumpet blasts. Understanding is essential as we delve into the trumpet judgments described in Revelation, as they are not merely a series of arbitrary plagues, but rather a part of God’s ultimate plan for bringing about justice and redemption. The catastrophes unleashed by the sounding of the trumpets are a glimpse into the consequences of human sin and rebellion against God. Throughout the Bible, we see the recurring theme of God’s judgment being intertwined with His mercy, as He seeks to draw people back to Himself through both warnings and signs. We are reminded of the importance of heeding God’s warnings, turning away from sin, and seeking His forgiveness and redemption by examining Revelation 8:6-13. The events described in this passage serve as a powerful reminder of the consequences of rejecting God’s authority and the need for repentance before the final day of judgment arrives.

Revelation 7:1-17 King James Version
1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,
3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.
5 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand.
6 Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nephthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand.
7 Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand.
8 Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.
9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.
16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.
17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN:

The scene described in this passage seems to occur between the opening of the sixth and seventh seals, seen on the scroll John observed in chapter 5.

The first vision includes angels being commanded to hold back the winds at every point on earth. Symbolically, this refers to God suspending His judgment on the earth. Scriptures such as Jeremiah 49:36 describe the judgment of God by referring to wind. The purpose of this delay, it seems, is to allow for a "sealing" of 144,000 servants of God. As seen later (Revelation 13:15–18), the "mark of the beast" stands in stark contrast to the sealing seen in this chapter (Revelation 7:1–3).

These 144,000 are specifically named by their respective tribes of Israel. Twelve thousand from each tribe are indicated. Jacob had twelve sons from whom the twelve tribes of Israel originated. In the Promised Land, each of the tribes received an inheritance except for the tribe of Levi, whose inheritance was the Lord. Joseph's tribe was split into two, one for each of his sons (Manasseh and Ephraim), and each received an inheritance. In the list of those sealed in Revelation, the tribe of Levi is listed. The tribe of Manasseh and that of Joseph (which is what the tribe of Ephraim was also referred to) are also listed.

John's next vision is of a staggering number of people, from every race, ethnicity and language, dressed in white and shouting out praise to God. This is a poignant reminder of God's love for all people, and the essential unity of mankind. Despite efforts to divide humanity based on appearance or heritage, Scripture is clear that all people, of all tribes and languages, will be represented in God's eternal plan of salvation. An unnamed elder defines these white-robed saints as those who have come out of the great tribulation—the second half of the seven-year period which closes out history prior to the millennial kingdom (Revelation 7:9–17).

After this interlude, John's vision will continue with the opening of the seventh seal, introducing the next phase of God's plan: the "trumpet" judgments.

Revelation 6 King James Version
1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN:

In Revelation 6, John the Apostle witnesses the Lamb (symbolic representation of Jesus) breaking the first six seals. The breaking of the first four seals unleashes the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse , representing conquest, war, famine, and death. These horsemen symbolize a period of tribulation marked by conflict, scarcity, and widespread mortality.

Seal 1: White Conquest A rider on a white horse appears, holding a bow and crowned, symbolizing a conqueror.
Seal 2: Red War The rider on a red horse is given authority to take peace from the earth, leading to conflict.
Seal 3: Black Famine The rider on a black horse carries scales, indicating severe food shortages and high prices.
Seal 4: Pale Death The rider on a pale horse, named Death, is followed by Hades, with authority to kill a quarter of the earth's population.

Seal 5: The Martyrs The fifth seal reveals the souls of martyrs under the altar, crying out for justice. They are given white robes and told to wait until the full number of their fellow believers is reached.

Seal 6: Cosmic Upheaval The sixth seal unleashes a series of cosmic disturbances, including a great earthquake, darkening of the sun, and the moon turning blood-red. This leads to widespread terror among people of all statuses, who seek to hide from divine wrath.

REVELATION 6 THEMES:

1. Divine Judgment: The breaking of the seals signifies God’s judgment on a sinful world, depicted through symbolic events like the Four Horsemen.
2. Tribulation: The chapter offers a glimpse into a future period of intense suffering and hardship.
3. Hope Amidst Judgment: Despite the bleak imagery, the presence of the martyrs suggests ultimate vindication for the faithful.
4. Symbolic Language: The chapter heavily employs symbolic language, with the horsemen and cosmic disturbances representing the devastating consequences of sin.

"God is not wanting anyone to perish, but people must respond to the free gift of salvation, and the offer of His forgiveness." "Who shall be able to stand?"
