Pope Leo XIV delivered a message of solidarity with migrants, emphasizing their humanity, dignity, and personal stories.

Addressing those who have left their homes in search of safety or opportunity, the pope said migrants should not be reduced to statistics or bureaucratic cases. Instead, he urged people to recognize them as individuals with families, dreams, and lives worthy of respect.

Pope Leo XIV made an apology on Monday for the role the Holy See itself played in legitimizing slavery and for having failed to condemn it for centuries, calling the Vatican’s record a “wound in Christian memory.”

Past popes have apologized for Christians’ involvement in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. But no pope has ever publicly acknowledged, much less apologized for, the role that past popes themselves played in giving European sovereigns explicit authority to subjugate and enslave “infidels.”

One year ago today, Pope Francis appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's to give his Easter blessing to the world. His voice was weak. He had trouble raising his arm to make the sign of the cross.

Then he got into the popemobile and drove through the crowds anyway.

He passed away the next morning, Easter Monday, at 7:35 a.m.

That last ride through St. Peter's Square was quintessential Francis: weakened in body, but unbroken in spirit, living his call to all Catholics to "go out".

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. Requiescat in pace.
