St. Augustine is a small Western Rite parish of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch's North American Archdiocese, overseen by His Eminence Metropolitan Archbishop Joseph and His Grace Bishop John, Vicar Bishop for the Western Rite Vicariate. We are thus in communion not only with our own Patriarch John X of Antioch - Successor to the First Chair of St. Peter, but also with the canonical Orthodox Church throughout the whole world--including Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, and with the other canonical Sees of the Holy Orthodox Catholic Church. As St. Andrew the-first-called said to his brother, St. Peter, "Come and see!" We are located in the historic Baker neighborhood of Denver, Colorado, and we welcome you to join us in prayer, worship, and service of God and neighbor. Our worship services are those of the ancient Church of Rome, sometimes called the Liturgy of St. Peter or the Liturgy of St. Gregory the Great; it is sometimes mistakenly called the Tridentine Liturgy, after the Council of Trent held in the 16th century, but the few changes made at that Roman Catholic Council had no effect upon the ancient, received tradition as it was known to the Orthodox world up to the 12th Century. The services are in English with the use of some Latin, and a tiny bit of Greek, as an expression of continuity with the tradition of our Saints. Following the 10:00 a.m. Sung Mass, we host a terrific coffee hour, replete with hearty meals and joyful fellowship.
Our Pastor is the Rt. Rev. Abbot Theodore (Phillips), of the Holy Monastery of Our Lady and Saint Laurence, located in the mountains above Canon City, CO [ You may visit the monastery at www.ladyminster.com ], which lives according to the ancient Rule of St. Benedict. He assisted at the St. Augustine's part-time from 2013 through Paschaltide of 2018 and was named Pastor on May 1 of that year. We are also blessed with the occasional ministries of the Very Rev. L. Michael Bundy, Obl.SB (retired Pastor of St. Columba Orthodox Church, Lafayette, CO) and the Rev. Demetrios Andrewes (Director of Project Mexico).
In these turbulent times, St. Augustine's is open to all who seek to experience the timeless Truth of the Christian faith, anchored in Holy Scripture and interpreted according to the living Tradition of the Orthodox Church -- a continuous community dating back to the first Pentecost in Jerusalem, when the Holy Spirit descended upon and emboldened the Apostles to preach the Risen Christ, to whom be glory and honor now and unto all ages of ages. Amen!
