Fundraiser for artist and BLM organizer, Kayla Marque.
In response to our Community statement to Black Lives Matter, the fourth Sunday discussion was designed to address the question of how will we change our lifestyles. Many avenues were suggested in the course of the lively discussion. Some of the wishes and resolutions included intentions such as reach out to more African Americans; support Black-owned businesses, educate ourselves further through books and videos. Immediately following this discussion we were made aware of a situation of a young African American woman in our city (close friend of Lisa Engelken, David and Tricia’s daughter) who hit rock bottom in the wake of all the crises that are impacting our country now.
Kayla’s story: Kayla Marque is a pillar in the Denver art community. Born and raised in Denver, an alumni of East High School, Kayla has been performing for over 10 years. An active member of The Black Actor’s Guild, she is more than a musician, she is an educator, a leader for many young artists and a community organizer. Most recently, she organized an initiative for Black Lives Matter with the Indigenous Youth Council to provide Art Messaging and First Aid/Frontline Action Training for BLM protests downtown. This call for support is to help relieve her after a series of recent hardships: declaring bankruptcy, unemployment due to COVID, and now having family members diagnosed with COVID this past week.
When Lisa called Kayla to let her know that this community would like to help her, she expressed that even the fact that a church community is aware and cares about the Black experience in America and these hardships as a result of systemic oppression gave her relief and hope.
The BLM organizers of 10:30 have agreed that an immediate response would be to help Kayla purchase a car. (Kayla was planning to replace her existing car just before COVID hit.) We have the support of Dave Meggitt from Meggitt Motors to locate a used reliable car. This small step would give Kayla a huge morale boost in a very difficult time in her life.
We have set a goal of raising $3000. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please make your check out to 10:30 Community with the footnote “BLM”. Checks can be mailed to the church at 1100 Fillmore Street; Attn: 10:30 Community Treasurer; Denver, CO; 80206. Please share this project with anyone in your circle who might be interested in helping. Donations will be accepted through the month of July.
