What if, in all your waiting for God to do something dramatic, you missed His voice? Are you waiting for God to move in some dramatic way before you respond? Waiting for the wind to blow, the ground to shake, or the fire to fall?

In 1 Kings 19, Elijah witnessed the wind, the earthquake, and the fire, but the Lord was not in them. Then afterward came a still small voice. And when God spoke, He asked, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Sometimes we become so focused on waiting for God to move in a way we can see and recognize that we fail to hear what He is already saying. We keep asking Him for another sign, another confirmation, another encounter, all while He may be asking, “Why are you still here?”

At some point, we have to stop asking God to do something new while we are still standing where He last told us to move.

“The LORD our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying: ‘You have dwelt long enough at this mountain.’”

What happens when we encounter the majestic glory of the living God?

When we encounter the glory of God, there will be a response. It may look like weeping, kneeling, worshiping, trembling, or simply being still. His presence doesn’t just require a response. It demands one.

Scripture shows us that when God makes His glory known, even people whose hearts aren’t surrendered to Him can be overwhelmed by what they experience and respond with fear, awe, or reverence.

Pharaoh acknowledged the power of God. Israel saw His glory at Mount Sinai. Throughout Scripture, people witnessed the mighty works of God and responded with fear and awe, yet some still went back to disobedience, unbelief, or doing things their own way.

So the question isn’t, “Did we respond when His glory was revealed?” The question is, “What did we do with what His glory revealed in us?”

Did we surrender? Did we repent? Did we obey? Did we get still enough to listen?

Did His presence lead us to the altar of the Lord? Or did we go back to our own?

When we think about having an altar of our own, we may picture something obviously rebellious against God. But sometimes our own altar looks a whole lot more respectable than that.

It can be the altar of other people’s opinions, where we become more concerned about how we are perceived than what God is asking of us.

It can be the altar of “I don’t have anything to surrender or repent of. I’m a good person.” But when we stand in the presence of a holy and righteous God, our goodness isn’t the standard. His holiness is.

It can be the altar of self-reliance, where we trust what we can do instead of surrendering our need for Him.

It can be the altar of impatience, where we decide God isn’t moving fast enough and we start looking for somewhere else to go or something else to focus on.

It can be the altar of control, where we say we trust God as long as we still get to decide how things unfold.

And sometimes it can even be the altar of our own understanding.

Elijah repaired the altar of the LORD that had been broken down. 1 Kings 18:30

Encountering the glory of the Lord should change something in us.

Did His presence lead us to His altar?
The altar of reverence.
The altar of surrender.
The altar of repentance.
The altar of obedience.
The altar of trust.
The altar of humility.

Because when we truly recognize that we are standing before a holy and righteous God, we don’t come to His altar to negotiate, we come to surrender.

If the Lord is showing us an altar we have been standing at that was never His, it’s time to tear it down and come back to the altar of the Lord.

Because when we encounter the glory of the living God, the question isn’t whether He is worthy of our surrender(HE IS).

The question is, will we give it to Him?

May the manifest presence of His holy and majestic glory bring us to His altar where reverence becomes surrender, holy fear becomes obedience, and encountering His glory changes the way we live.

All we can say is thank you Jesus for allowing us to leave it all at the fire!

Does today look like the days of Noah?

Jesus said, “But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” Matthew 24:37

So what does Scripture tell us the days of Noah were like?

Genesis 6 describes a world filled with corruption and violence. People were carrying on with everyday life, distracted by the things of this world, all while judgment was coming. And in the middle of it all, God gave Noah a warning.

But He didn’t just warn Noah that judgment was coming, He provided a way of salvation. A way that would take faith to accomplish.

And just as God gave Noah a warning, Scripture gives us warning about the days leading up to Christ’s return. Jesus warned us about deception, wars, famines, pestilences, earthquakes, betrayal, false prophets, lawlessness and the love of many growing cold. Matthew 24:4–14

Paul warned that in the last days people would become lovers of themselves, lovers of money, proud, unthankful, unholy, unforgiving, without self-control and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. 2 Timothy 3:1–5

Sound familiar?

When we look around us today, we don’t have to look very far to see a world filled with division, violence, deception, lawlessness, hatred and a growing rejection of the things of God. The warning bells are going off.

But Jesus said, “But of that day and hour no one knows…” Matthew 24:36
Just as Noah did not know when the rain would come, we don’t know when the Son of Man is coming. Jesus gave us these warnings so we would be prepared for His return.

Noah believed God, built the ark, and entered through the door God provided. Just as it took faith for Noah to believe God’s warning and enter the door God provided to be saved from judgment, it takes faith for us to believe God’s Word, trust in Jesus, and enter through the Door He has provided for our eternal salvation.

Jesus said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved.” John 10:9

The ark was God’s provision for Noah. Christ is God’s provision for us. It still takes faith to walk through the Door.

Walking through the Door isn’t just believing that Jesus exists or believing that He is coming again. It is trusting Him with your life, surrendering to Him, following Him, and being found in Him.

Because the people in Noah’s day carried on as if they controlled the future. Life looked normal, until it wasn’t.

The warning had been given. The ark had been provided. The door was open. And then the flood came.

Jesus said His coming will be like that…

We don’t know the day. We don’t know the hour. But we know Jesus is coming.

The Door is still open.

So don’t just look at the days of Noah and ask, “Does the world look like this?” Look at your own heart.

Are you in Christ? Are you trusting Him? Have you surrendered your life to Him? Are you ready to stand before Him?

You don’t need to know the day He is coming. You just need to be ready when He does.

The warning has been given, the refuge has been provided and the Door is still open.

If you haven’t already, will you walk through the Door? Will you put your faith in Jesus? Will you surrender your life to Him? Will you be found in Christ when the Son of Man returns?

Don’t be found outside the refuge, like those who ignored the warning in the days of Noah.

Enter today into the refuge God has provided.
