We're Rachael & Kyle Vermeulen,

Just a couple of adventurers living our best life with our two incredible boys in the Rocky Mountains. Life threw us a curveball when our son Caleb was diagnosed with Down Syndrome and medical complexities, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild, beautiful ride of embracing the unexpected ever since.

1 in 20 homes here in Colorado is navigating the world of raising a child with a disability. It’s a journey that’s as challenging as it is rewarding, and it’s taught us a thing or two about the power of love, resilience, and finding joy in the little things God shows us along the way. Speaking of challenges, this statistic always takes our breath away: a 90% divorce rate for parents of children with disabilities. It’s a stark reminder of how crucial it is to keep our family bond strong and support each other through thick and thin. And that’s precisely what we’re committed to doing. The heart of who we are and our ministry is about finding God in the midst of the chaos, and about clinging to faith when the world seems to spin out of control. We’ve seen firsthand how easy it is for families like ours to lose faith and hope, especially when the hustle and bustle of disability parenting makes it hard to even step foot in a church or consistent community regularly. That’s why 'A Little Extra Love' isn’t just about sharing our journey; it’s about lifting up and empowering disability parents and caregivers through a faith-driven community rooted in hope, healing, and—yes—extra love. We’re here to remind everyone that God walks this path with us, in the laughter, the tears, and every moment in between. Our mission is to create a space where families facing similar challenges can come together, feel understood, and find strength in numbers. We believe in the transformative power of sharing our stories, in the healing that comes from faith, and in the incredible resilience of families like ours. So, whether you’re a fellow special needs parent, a friend, or just someone who loves a good story and believes in the power of faith, we invite you to join us on this crazy, beautiful adventure. She knows which seat he likes. She knows what he means when no one else does. She knows what to do when the room gets loud. And somewhere along the way, a lot of her Sundays became about what she knows.

Siblings of kids with disabilities carry more than most of us see. Many of them love their brother or sister fiercely and would choose to help. That love is real and it’s good. But a child’s willingness was never meant to cover a gap in our volunteer plan. When the disciples tried to keep children away, Jesus didn’t just let them in. He took them in his arms and blessed them. That’s the posture we want for every kid in our hallways, including the one who’s always helping.

Church leaders and kids’ ministry teams: give her a real choice, have an adult ready either way, and ask about her week. Then remember what she said.

Parents, if this is your daughter, you haven’t done anything wrong by being grateful for her help. You’re carrying so much. This is the church’s work to share with you.

He can tell you every therapy goal, every med change, every word the specialist said. But when was the last time someone asked him how he's doing and waited for more than "fine"?

Dads in disability families carry so much. The phone calls on lunch breaks. The worry they don't say out loud so no one else has to carry it. The joy they'd love to brag about if anyone stayed long enough to hear.

ROOTED Dads is our online Bible study for fathers raising kids with disabilities. The name comes from Colossians 2:7, "rooted and built up in him." It's Scripture, prayer, and real conversation with men who understand. No prep. Come when you can.

7:52 on a Sunday morning. The buddy texts that she's sick. And a mom who finally got to sit in worship is back on a tiny chair in the kids' wing. Nobody meant for that to happen. But one sick day shouldn't decide whether a family gets to worship.

A volunteer should be able to rest. A child should have support he can count on. A mom should get to receive care, too. If all three depend on one person showing up, it's worth a look.

How many times have you rewritten that email?

I know the one. You open it after bedtime, after the meds and the last load of laundry. You add another "so sorry to bother you." You delete the sentence that says what actually happened in the kids' wing on Sunday. You soften it until it barely sounds like a need at all.

Friend, I understand why. You love your church. You don't want to be a burden. You want your child to belong there. But Acts 6 shows a growing, Spirit-filled church that was still missing some of its people. When someone named it, the church didn't get defensive. It reorganized. And the word of God kept spreading.

Your church can't care for a need it's never been told about. Telling the truth isn't disloyalty. It's how the body finds out where it's hurting (1 Corinthians 12:26).

So here's my question for you: what's the one sentence you keep deleting?

A church can be fully accessible… and still feel impossible to enter, because welcome isn’t the same as withness. You can meet needs and never move close enough to know a story. You can be kind, helpful, accommodating, and still leave someone carrying it alone. But Jesus doesn’t love like that. He stays. He returns. He moves toward us again and again.

There’s a version of “welcome” that costs us nothing. And then there’s the kind Jesus actually modeled. The kind that interrupts. That rearranges. That makes room where it wasn’t convenient to.

Some of us have been told, directly or quietly, that our children don’t fit. Not because they don’t belong, but because belonging would require change. And systems don’t like to bend.

But the Gospel has never been about ease. It has always been about pursuit.
