A Little Extra Love

A Little Extra Love Empowering families navigating disability with faith, community, and resources, while equipping churches to move beyond inclusion to true belonging.đŸ€

Hey there,

We're Rachael & Kyle Vermeulen,

Just a couple of adventurers living our best life with our two incredible boys in the Rocky Mountains. Life threw us a curveball when our son Caleb was diagnosed with Down Syndrome and medical complexities, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild, beautiful ride of embracing the unexpected ever since.

1 in 20 homes here in Colorado is navigating the wo

rld of raising a child with a disability. It’s a journey that’s as challenging as it is rewarding, and it’s taught us a thing or two about the power of love, resilience, and finding joy in the little things God shows us along the way. Speaking of challenges, this statistic always takes our breath away: a 90% divorce rate for parents of children with disabilities. It’s a stark reminder of how crucial it is to keep our family bond strong and support each other through thick and thin. And that’s precisely what we’re committed to doing. The heart of who we are and our ministry is about finding God in the midst of the chaos, and about clinging to faith when the world seems to spin out of control. We’ve seen firsthand how easy it is for families like ours to lose faith and hope, especially when the hustle and bustle of disability parenting makes it hard to even step foot in a church or consistent community regularly. That’s why 'A Little Extra Love' isn’t just about sharing our journey; it’s about lifting up and empowering disability parents and caregivers through a faith-driven community rooted in hope, healing, and—yes—extra love. We’re here to remind everyone that God walks this path with us, in the laughter, the tears, and every moment in between. Our mission is to create a space where families facing similar challenges can come together, feel understood, and find strength in numbers. We believe in the transformative power of sharing our stories, in the healing that comes from faith, and in the incredible resilience of families like ours. So, whether you’re a fellow special needs parent, a friend, or just someone who loves a good story and believes in the power of faith, we invite you to join us on this crazy, beautiful adventure. Let’s navigate this journey together, rooted by hope, wrapped in grace, and armed with the kind of love that moves mountains. A church can be fully accessible
and still feel impossible to enter, because welcome isn’t the same as withness. You can meet needs and never move close enough to know a story. You can be kind, helpful, accommodating, and still leave someone carrying it alone. But Jesus doesn’t love like that. He stays. He returns. He moves toward us again and again.

If you’ve ever felt welcomed but not known, this conversation will put language to what your heart has been holding.

There’s a version of “welcome” that costs us nothing. And then there’s the kind Jesus actually modeled. The kind that interrupts. That rearranges. That makes room where it wasn’t convenient to.

Some of us have been told, directly or quietly, that our children don’t fit. Not because they don’t belong, but because belonging would require change. And systems don’t like to bend.

But the Gospel has never been about ease. It has always been about pursuit.

In this episode of A Little Extra Love, Abby from puts words to this tension so many of us have been carrying.

If this resonated with you, if you’ve felt this but didn’t have words for it, you will want to listen.

Some of you feel it every Sunday. The tension. The wondering if your family actually belongs

A church without a plan isn’t just unprepared.
It leaves families wondering if they’re safe, seen, or supported.

Good shepherds don’t wait for need to arrive.
They prepare for it. Disability inclusion isn’t about programming more. It’s about shepherding well.

If your church wants to move from reacting to ready, we can help.

Some of the holiest work you will ever do
will never look impressive.

It looks like caregiving.
Like repeating yourself again.
Like carrying a weight you didn’t choose.
Like learning to depend on God in ways you never expected.

And slowly
you begin to see something sacred. Because the Kingdom of God has never run on independence.

Not strength.
Not capability.
Not having everything together.
It runs on surrender.

In this new episode of A Little Extra Love, I’m joined by Sarah Lowry from as we talk about disability, dependence, and the beautiful truth that our children never have to qualify for the presence of the Holy Spirit.

The gospel has never been limited by intellect. Somewhere along the way, the church started believing that spiritual depth requires cognitive ability. That discipleship has to be simplified or separated for people with intellectual disabilities.

But the Holy Spirit is not intimidated by cognitive delay. God does not require high cognition to grant deep communion.

Season 2 of the A Little Extra Love Podcast begins with this conversation with of because believers with intellectual disabilities are not side stories in the church. They are indispensable to the Body.

They didn’t stop going to church because they stopped believing. They stopped going because no one made space for them to belong.

This Giving Tuesday, we’re asking you to help us change that.

For the families worshiping from the margins.‹For the child turned away from Sunday school.‹For the mom who’s never been able to sit through a service without being paged.
We believe the Church should reflect the fullness of Christ,‹and that includes every ability, every diagnosis, every story.

🧡 Every dollar helps us equip more churches and serve more families.‹🧡 Every gift goes directly to resources, Bible studies, training, and support—always free for the families we serve impacted by disability.

Because revival might not look like lights and sound. It might look like a buddy bench. A sensory room. A child with a disability lifting their hands in worship. Let’s build that Church. Together. đŸ€

Clarity isn’t childish. It’s Christlike.
Jesus used pictures, stories, and symbols so His people could see and remember truth.

Visual schedules and social stories aren’t just for kids, they’re tools of peace and understanding for every age.

If your church is ready to move from confusing to clear, Inclusive Pathways can help.

Inclusion was never God’s “new idea.”
It’s always been the mark of His faithful ones.

From the foreigner and the widow to the blind and the broken, God’s heart has always moved from the margins to the center.

The Church doesn’t need something modern.
We need to return to ancient faithfulness.

Dad, God didn’t miscast you.
He chose you for this child, on purpose, with purpose.

You don’t have to be a superhero. Your kids don’t need perfection, they need presence. They’ll remember your face at 3 a.m. more than the words you never found.

And you don’t have to carry the weight alone. Healing starts where hiding stops. Strength is found in showing up, opening up, and letting others stand with you.

Comment COMMUNITY to join other dads raising kids with disabilities because no father should walk this road alone.

The truth is, churches don’t drift into inclusion, they build it. Belonging isn’t birthed out of warm smiles and well-meaning words; it’s birthed in systems of care, in leadership that carries weight, and in org charts that declare, “This is part of our theology.” If disability ministry is missing from your budget and leadership structure, it’s missing from your heart. And when it’s missing, families hear a message you never meant to send: “You don’t belong here.”

That’s why Inclusive Pathways exists. To move churches from good intentions to lasting systems of inclusion. God’s mandate has always been clear: His house is for every body.
