Sermon Synopsis: What is the story of the Tower of Babel really about? Used as inspiration for zealous nationalism, the story has been mistakenly understood as God’s curse on humanity in the form of multilingualism. Instead, what we see is the persistent vision of God’s kin-dom, diverse and beautiful, unified in the embodiment of shalom.

Sermon Synopsis: How are we supposed to understand Bible stories where actions attributed to God would be morally reprehensible if a human did the same? Does the story of Noah and the Ark and a very angry God tell us what God is like or does it tell us what the author long ago thought God was like? If Jesus shows us that God is just like Jesus, how does that filter affect how we read scripture without concluding that there was an angry God in the Old Testament and a much nicer God in the New Testament?

As we wrap up this challenging series, we’ll look at our last moral foundational value: Liberty v. Oppression. Freedom for self-determination is a significant theme throughout the Bible. The challenge for us comes in understanding who has access to this kind of liberty, both spiritually and in our daily lives, and at what cost? Join us in this final conversation, as we work hard to better understand ourselves and others. Our goal is, always, to affirm the sacred dignity of all people… including those we disagree with.
