"Quo Vadis" is a Latin phrase meaning, "whither goest thou?" According to Christian tradition, St. Peter fled Rome to avoid persecution. As he walked on the Via Appia, Our Lord appeared to him. St. Peter asked, "Domine, quo vadis?" Jesus replied, "I am coming to Rome to be crucified a second time." Ashamed of his weakness, St. Peter returned to Rome where he was martyred.
