What I Got This Morning

What I Got This Morning This account is about what God is personally teaching me in my walk with Him.

Sometimes we need to go back to the simple gospel. We can overthink theology and miss the entire message. I share this verse with my kids at Liberty on a weekly basis. When we talk about this verse, I can see their faces light up because they understand it. God made it simple for us. We are the ones that over complicate it. My favorite salvation story is the thief on the cross. Never went to a Bible study, never got baptized, never read the Bible. Yet, he was hanging there on a cross with Jesus, and he gave a small glimpse of faith in Jesus. The thief said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

I believe there will be far more people in heaven than what we believe. Jesus died for all sin, not just the “kind of bad” sin. We are all sinners, we just sin differently. If God can save me, he can save anyone. His grace is massive.

Romans 10:9-11: “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

The disciples went out to catch fish. Peter told Jesus, “We have toiled all night and have caught nothing.” The disciples were exhausted. Jesus found them cleaning their nets ready to go home. Jesus said, “Put out into the deep and let your nets down for a catch one more time.” They went out one more time as Jesus told them to, and they ended up catching so many fish that their net was about to break. They had to signal the other boat to help them haul it in.

Have you ever been trying and striving to do the right thing and nothing seems to work? We can find ourselves like Peter where we try so hard and we feel like we aren’t getting alot in return. This passage reminds me that empty seasons are not wasteful seasons. Jesus meets us where we are. He sees our hard work and our toil. He sees our waiting. It’s in the waiting where we rely on Jesus and learn to trust Him. This passage reminds me to keep being faithful and obedient even in the dry seasons. I believe we learn more about God in these seasons than any other. Our faith grows stronger in seasons like this. I love that Peter went out again after being out all night. It takes a ton of faith.

After Peter caught all of the fish, he fell down and said, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord.” It says that the people with Peter were astonished at how much fish they caught. The Lords grace is massive. He is ready to bless us. Be ready to be obedient and say, “yes” to Him. It may not come right away. It may take years. Just keep saying “yes.”

Think about the blessings in your life. List them on paper. God has blessed each of us more than we know. He loves to give and His grace is abundant. Continue to rely on Him and say “yes.” You will learn more in the waiting than any other time.

1 Peter is an amazing read. Peter calls the Christians to stand firm against the evil in our day. Be prepared to walk holy and blameless in our society even if it will cost you something. Stand up against the evil in our culture. Stand firm in our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He tells us to not shrink back when trials come, and lean in even more on Jesus when tough times appear.

We never want to be quiet about our faith. We want our faith to be the most important thing in our lives. We do not make Jesus a priority, we make Him THE priority, and everything else flows from that. Jesus isn’t a hobby we pick up from time to time. He is our treasure that we dedicate our lives toward.

Peter makes it clear that when you are a Christian, your entire life should look different than the world. He says in 1 Peter 4:4, “They are surprised when you do not join the world in their debauchery, and they will malign you.”

This world is not our home. Our citizenship is in heaven. Jesus said in John 16:33 “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Heaven is completely different than the world we live in now. Jesus came to Earth and showed us what heaven would be like. The world didn’t accept it. But, Jesus overcame the world. The King of Kings. Live a kingdom life regardless of what people think. Stand firm in your faith and above all, love God more than anything on earth.

God calls men to not be leaders that America would define. He calls us to be servant leaders. I can’t find one place in Scripture where Jesus is ordering people to serve Him. He is serving and loving others. He modeled it perfectly. Philippians 2 is my favorite chapter in the Bible. It says that Jesus humbled Himself to the point of death, even death on a cross. The Man we worship was a humble servant. That’s what our lives should be about.

Our thoughts and desires come out in our lives in so many ways. Our actions show what our heart gravitates to most. What’s in our heart comes out in our actions. What we spend most of our days doing and thinking about is what we care about most. That’s why if we love something or someone, we do things for that person. It’s more than just words. Love is an action verb.

In my time with God this morning, I came across Luke 12:34. It says, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". If Jesus is your treasure, you will naturally live a kingdom filled life. Your eyes are focused on the things above like Colossians 3:1-3 tells us to do. Give Jesus your full attention and priority. You won’t regret it. The stuff that we acquire down here isn’t lasting. We will have to give it up one day. Jesus is the only eternal treasure.

The word “believe” is written 98 times in the Book of John. I believe that The Book of John was written to show us that Gods entire message is to believe in the Name of Jesus. Boy, do we complicate it. Jesus entire message is to believe in Him for eternal life. John 20:31 is a foundational verse in the Book of John that I believe summarizes the entire book. It says, "But these things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His Name.” It’s all about belief. And when you believe, He will change your heart and transform your life over time.

I recently heard, “We need to let God pour into us every morning so we can pour into others throughout our day.” Let God pour into you when you wake up so that you have the heart to intentionally pour into others at work or in the world. When we center our heart around God in the morning, we are saying to Him, “I need you to center me because You are the center of my being. You are my righteousness. I need You so I can be in this world as a faithful disciple of You.” We can’t disciple people without God discipling our hearts first.

Psalm 5:3- "In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.”

So often, we think the only way we can experience God is through the Bible or Christian books. But I think it’s just as important to experience the Creator through everyday life. How often do we read the bible and just go about our day? When I wake up in the early morning to see the sun rise I experience Him on a deep level. We are trained to only experience God through words on a page. But the God who made the universe wants us to be in awe of every facet of the world. It has been cool to see the sun rise and experience Him in that magical way, and then read about Him in the Bible right after. When I see Him in creation before I get in the Word, it helps me remember how incredible God really is. It reminds me of who I am reading about. I sit there for about 30 minutes to an hour and pause with God before I do anything else. My In-Laws bought us rocking chairs a few months ago and I have definitely put them to use!

I recently saw an article that Bob Goff has made a “Bible doing group” instead of a “Bible study group.” He said, “We need less Bible studies in America and more walking the walk.” His group will read some verses and then they will pack their Bibles up, and they will go out and exercise what they just read. I thought it was a cool concept.

I read the first 11 chapters this morning in Proverbs. What I got:

Seek God, wisdom, insight, integrity, humility, and obedience. Get the right people around you. Fear the Lord, and walk in righteousness. Be a hard worker and whatever you find your hand to do be diligent at it. Walk in the ways of the wise. Trust in the Lord with all of your heart. When you walk in the ways of the Lord, your life will naturally prosper. It’s not talking about the prosperity Gospel. It’s saying that if you walk in the ways of the Lord your relationships will be stronger, you will have less worry since you aren’t defrauding or slandering your neighbor, you will have a reputation of honor, and people will trust you.

It says to flee pride, slander, perverted speech, lust, unwanted gain, laziness, and anger. When you walk in the ways of evil, your life will naturally be harder. People won’t trust you and your life will rapidly go down hill.

When God gives us guidelines to live by He isn’t defrauding us of a boring life. He wants our lives to count. He wants us to live a prosperous life on Earth. He is showing us what the good life is all about. You won’t find the good life by looking at the world. The good life is about loving God, observing His commands, and treating His people right.

When we believe in Jesus and the Holy Spirit comes into our soul I believe our lives, wants, and desires will look like the first paragraph. Not perfect. But our wants and desires should want what God desires for us. Which is a prosperous life with Him at the center of it all!

We are good at telling other people that God loves them. We are good at telling people that Jesus loves them so much that He died for their sins. But when it comes to ourselves, we have a hard time believing that God loves us. We can think in the back of our minds that Jesus died for the sins of the world, yet He didn’t die for mine. Or He died for all of my sins, but there’s a few that He left for me to work off in my obedience. That is actually a belief that Catholics hold. The problem with that is it’s not the Gospel. This mentality only causes us to strive. To work for Gods love. Jesus died for our sins so that we don’t have to strive for His love.

Romans 3:23 says, “We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” All of us have. There’s not one thing or act that we can do by ourselves to escape the fact that we have sinned against a holy God. When Jesus came down, He lived a perfect life, and died a sinners death on behalf of humanity. There’s not one sin that He left off the cross for you to work off.

One of my favorite books in the Bible is Galatians. Galatians tells us that the Law was made to show us that we are sinners that need a Savior. None of us can keep the Law perfectly. The Law corners us in on all sides. We need something greater than ourselves to save us. That is Jesus Christ. He did all of the work for you. Now, we are free from sin. We’re free from the curse it brings. Romans 8:1 says, “Therefore there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus.” Psalm 103:12 says, “As far as the East is from the West,so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” What would it look like to really believe this in your heart?

God loves everything about you. He calls us His workmanship. He knit you together. He formed you. He formed your personality, He loves your hobbies, He loves your fascinations, He loves your strengths, He loves watching you be a husband, father, wife, mom, etc. He loves you more than anyone has ever loved you. He knows more about you than you know about yourself. He loves you when you do good, and when you mess up. All of you, at all times. Focus on this! We have ultimate love and freedom in Jesus. We are our worst critic. God is very much for you!

God doesn’t owe us anything. Sometimes we have a victim mentality that God owes us. He doesn’t. In fact, if we were owed anything it would be eternal torment away from the presence of God. Yet, He continues to give us blessings everyday. He gave us the greatest gift that has ever been given in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. He gave us eternity! Eternal bliss with God. He didn’t have to, but He chose to. Completely out of abundant love and grace. Not only that, but every Earthly thing that you possess is from God. A spouse, a roof over your head, food, fun, laughter, health, kids, safety, a job, a place to worship. It’s all blessings from God that He chooses to give us everyday. If you woke up today, that’s a blessing. Many people didn’t wake up.

He gives blessings to believers and unbelievers. Even people that hurl insults towards Him, He still lets them enjoy life down here. It’s called common grace. The only problem with that is that this is all you get as a non believer. This is as good as it will ever get! But for a believer, we haven’t even touched the surface of how amazing His blessings are. We have so much good waiting for us in eternity. Our citizenship is in heaven as Paul says in Philippians 3. We are just passing through this place called Earth. I sit here in this coffee shop that I’m in, and I am amazed at how good God truly is. His love endures forever.
