Old Cowboys

Old cowboys rise before the sun,
Though most their ridin’ days are done.
They warm their hands around a cup
And watch the quiet country wake up.

Their hats hang close beside the door,
Their boots don’t hurry like before.
But let a horse call from the pen—
You’ll see that young man stir again.

They’ve buried dogs and faithful friends,
Mended wire and made amends.
Some things they’ll tell you sittin’ there;
Some only reach the Lord in prayer.

They miss the ones who rode along,
The cookfire smoke, an old-time song.
And sometimes, when the wind blows right,
Those memories keep them up at night.

So pull a chair up. Stay awhile.
Give that weathered face a smile.
There’s more beneath that faded brim
Than years have taken out of him.
