Welcome to our new hyfi curriculum and our first series, No Filter!
Filters can be fun, but they can also be something we hide behind to keep us from being known. The amazing truth is that we are fully known by God, and this changes everything.
We'll walk through the tension of other people’s opinions influencing how we see ourselves. Whether it be parents, coaches, friends, teachers, or even the opinions of strangers in society, the perspective others have of us can push us to view ourselves in a light that is not God’s.
We will engage with Luke 5:27-32, the event of Jesus and Matthew. Matthew’s occupation as a tax collector yielded a great deal of judgment and disdain from fellow Jewish people. One can assume that people’s opinions of Matthew probably influenced how he saw himself and interacted with others. Yet, Jesus is not fazed or faltered by other’s opinions of tax collectors. In fact, Jesus hung out with them, ate with them, and invited them to join in the good work He was doing in the world. This tells us that everyone—no matter their background, failures, weaknesses, or reputation—are wanted and invited to follow Jesus and join in His good work.
