Jesus’s instruction to confront those in sin is ultimately about our affection for others—our willingness to stick with those to whom we are united in Christ.

“Take up your cross,” Jesus commands his disciples. Yet what he means is far more radical than the familiar ways we speak of bearing our crosses today. Peter discovered in his day what every disciple of Jesus must discover: to bear one’s cross will always mean a death to self and to the priorities we so often pursue.

Our choir performed Grayston Ives’s "Crucifixus" this past Sunday. The anthem was recently commissioned as part of a project commemorating the 1,700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed last year. It takes the following text from the Creed: "Crucifixus etiam pro nobis sub Pontio Pilato; passus et sepultus est" (“He was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried”). The setting is expressive, beginning with the pounding intensity of the crucifixion and leading into the quiet passing into death.

Our 75th anniversary weekend will be one to remember! We will kick the celebration off on Saturday, September 26th at 5:00 pm with Choral Evensong, followed by a reception in our Parish Hall. Then on Sunday, September 27th, we will have a spoken 1928 Prayer Book service at 8:00 am, and a choral High Mass at 10:30 am. Our 10:30 am service on the 27th will include a sung Creed from the 1982 Hymnal (S-103). In order to familiarize ourselves with this setting, we will sing the Nicene Creed throughout the month of September at 10:30 am. Follow the link below to hear a recording by our choir.

This past Sunday, our choir performed Philip Moore's Come Dearest Lord, a gentle, devotional setting of a hymn by Isaac Watts based closely on Ephesians 3:16–21:

Come, dearest Lord, descend and dwell by faith and love in every breast; then shall we know and taste and feel the joys that cannot be expressed. Come, fill our hearts with inward strength, make our enlarged souls possess and learn the height and breadth and length of thine immeasurable grace. Now to the God whose power can do more than our thoughts or wishes know, be everlasting honours done by all the church, through Christ his Son.

Cecilia McDowall’s A Prayer of St Columba sets a text attributed to the sixth-century Irish saint, asking Christ to remain near and guide the faithful through both the joys and trials of life. McDowall’s luminous harmonies and flowing vocal lines give the prayer a serene, contemplative character, building toward a deeply reassuring expression of trust in God’s abiding presence.
