Context is important - “and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John‬ ‭8‬:‭32‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Jesus was speaking to “the Jews who had believed him.” (V31)
They say they have never been a slave to anyone so how is it they need to be freed. Jesus explains we are all a slave to sin. When we understand our own sinfulness and that Jesus gave his life for the forgiveness of that sin, then we can see the truth of his death and resurrection set us free from the burden of sin. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John‬ ‭8‬:‭36‬ ‭ESV‬‬
