The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
A Holy Day of Obligation… but NOT obligatory this year!
Tomorrow, Saturday, August 15, we celebrate the beautiful Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption is ordinarily a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics in the United States.
However, this year, August 15 falls on a Saturday. According to the norms established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, when the Assumption falls on a Saturday or Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated—meaning there is no obligation to attend Mass this year.
So, while Mass is not obligatory this year, we are still encouraged to celebrate this beautiful solemnity and honor our Blessed Mother!
Let us rejoice with Mary as we remember the hope of our own resurrection and the glory God has prepared for those who remain faithful to Him.
Our Lady of the Assumption, pray for us!
