They began their journey remember, following a pillar
of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night (13:21-22).
They were being lead supernaturally. All could see the direction
they were headed. They didn’t have to figure out where to go,
they simply needed to follow by faith. They headed out into the
wilderness of Shur, into Arabia….Shur means “wall” like a cliff
face…
After three days with no water, when they saw water, I’m
sure they were excited at first, relieved, looking forward to filling
their skins and watering their livestock. But then they discovered
the water was bitter. By the way, “Marah” means bitter. It was
named “Marah” because of this experience.
Certainly this was a serious and urgent problem. This was a
basic need unmet. People can typically live for 3 to 4 days
without water. People weren’t dying, but, where would they
go? They had been three days without seeing any water. So
there was not easy solution from a reasonable, natural
perspective.
So, they went from rejoicing and singing, to three days
later complaining. They were saying “what shall we drink?”
Next week, we’ll see them say, “what shall we eat?” These were
big issues no doubt, but remember, there was a context, there
was a developing story….
Had they forgotten what God did to accomplish their
deliverance? Had they forgotten the 10 plagues? Had they
forgotten how they walked through the Sea on dry ground and
how the Egyptians were drowned?
Maybe if you asked them they’d say, sure we remember.
But their present situation had become so big in their mind, it
was as if they had forgotten….
Didn’t He lead them there? Didn’t they follow the cloud
and the fire?
They did. Did they think He was surprised by this?
Did they think He didn’t care?
