BRUISED BUT NOT DEFEATED!

BRUISED BUT NOT DEFEATED! Life is full of people who MIGHT take a dislike to us, oppose us in every way, or speak evil of us. You never know if or when that will happen. King David, “a man after God’s own heart,” seemed to have that happen to him quite a lot. I am sure that wasn’t pleasant nor would it be for us. In Psalm 7 David describes how the events might happen, his thoughts, his prayers and God’s resultant action. In Psalm 7:17 David sums up his actions in relationship to the matter, “I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High,” (NIV).

In the middle of unpleasant situations how often do we take time to just give thanks to the Lord BECAUSE of His righteousness? Usually, we are focused on the problems in our life, people or circumstances, and that is what our prayers are focused on. How often do we just stop and give thanks to God because of his righteousness? We may not know why we have the problems we have, or even how the problems will be solved, or even who or what is causing our problems. But as a Christian this one thing we know, “God is righteous, and no matter what our problems are God will solve them in a way that will work His will in our lives,” (Romans 8:28).

It may seem difficult to sing praise to God in the middle of severe difficulties, especially if you have a voice like I have and have a hard time carrying a tune, even with the help of a bucket. David could at least carry a tune and he did indeed praise the name of the Lord Most High, the God above everyone and everything in the universe. And David offers a good example to us. In the face of adversity, when we are under siege, when our cause looks hopeless, and problems come like raging waves on the ocean, let us take time to sing praise to the Lord Most High and Most Righteous. Why? Because, He will bring the solutions we need and will eventually right all wrongs.

BLESSED AND SECURE!

BLESSED AND SECURE! “Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield,” (Psalm 5:12 NIV). It seems every day is a challenge in this world in which we live. And I think it has been that way ever since Adam sinned in the perfect garden in which God placed him. Living in Paradise turned into “a sweat of the brow existence.” So, it is today, as life goes on and the world spirals downward, while we Christians fulfill our task of being the “salt” and “light” to a spiritually needy world. Jesus is coming again and we pray it will be very soon as we keep an eye on the sky.

In the midst of these realities two things stand out in Psalm 5:12. We have a divine promise of God’s blessings in our life. God does bless the righteous. He always has. He is blessing now. And He will bless us into the eternal future. As Christians we experience God’s blessings on a daily basis. Circumstances sometimes may rob us of seeing the blessings of God that surround us but the blessings are there anyway. God blesses the righteous without fail. That is His promise. Our failure to open our spiritual eyes and recognize the blessings are our failures not God’s. So today talk to God and seek to view the blessings He brings into your life today.

In this verse God also reminds us that He offers us security. God surrounds us with His favor like a shield. The word picture is that of a soldier’s full body shield. A shield that is big enough to protect the entire body from the enemies’ weapons. As Christians we know that we have an enemy without called Satan and his demons; and we have an enemy within called a sin nature. But God is bigger and more powerful than all these things. God offers us security in the midst of our daily life and He offers us security for the future. The Holy God living in us is greater than all our enemies “foreign and domestic;” sin nature within and the world and devil without. So, face this day and every day in the knowledge that you are secure in God’s care and will be blessed beyond measure in every circumstance of life.

THE SILENT OBSERVER?

THE SILENT OBSERVER? “For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction,” (Psalm 1:6 NIV). The way we are often treated in this world we wonder if anyone ever looks out for our interest. It seems many people are out for me, me, me, meaning themselves, without regard for others. And this approach to life, for many people, often brings tragic consequences into the lives of those who sacrifice daily to help those in need around them. Often, one may think there is no justice in this world.

But as Christians we can be assured there is someone looking out for our interests each step of our way. God is always watching and working, so let us live secure in that knowledge and look forward to a day that is under God’s control. Bad things do happen to good people and we don’t always understand the reason why? But let us remember the final outcome, the way of the wicked will to their destruction. This is not a day of “an eye for an eye.” And often it seems justice does not prevail. It is also true that God is not just a silent observer but He is also an active participant in our lives through the work of the Holy Spirit. So, whether others watch over our ways for good or not, it is still true that, “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose,” (Romans 8:28 NIV). Even if we do not always understand how God works, we do have His assurance that He is working for our good.

LIGHT OUT OF DARKNESS!

LIGHT OUT OF DARKNESS. Christians have the light of Jesus shining in their hearts. “For God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ,” (2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV). People meet Jesus in different places. The Apostle Paul met Jesus on the road to Damascus. I met Jesus in a church service. My wife met Jesus at a church camp. People meet Jesus in different places. But when a person meets Jesus, God’s light of truth & salvation penetrates the darkness of the human heart and gives that person the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in Christ. When that happens, a person becomes “born again.” They are saved. They have become Christians. They have stepped out of spiritual darkness into spiritual light.

As you reflect on these things today, I would ask, “Have you experienced the light of Jesus shining in your heart?” If you don’t have a clue what I am talking about then the light hasn’t shone for you yet. God wants you to understand and receive the light found in Jesus Christ that dispels your spiritual darkness. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life,” (John 8:12 NIV). God wants every person to have the eternal life-giving light shining in their heart. That light is found in Jesus. If you haven’t met Jesus, today is a good day to meet Him. “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus will be saved,” (Romans 10:13 NIV) and the light of
Jesus will begin shining in their heart. If the light is shining in your heart say a prayer of thanks to God and have a great day!

FIRST THINGS FIRST!

FIRST THINGS FIRST. As a young man, and married with two children, I received Christ as my Savior. I had a lot of questions about what this new relationship with Jesus and what life was all about. As with all Christians, I went from sinner to Saint in an instant through my relationship with Christ; but figuring out my future steps in the Christian life raised a lot of questions. I am thankful for a godly Pastor and a wonderful local church family that helped me to figure out the answers to my questions. I am also thankful for the Word of God and a wonderful wife who walked and still walks the new life with me.

A key principle that I learned early in the Christian life was this, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well,” (Matthew 6:33 NIV). In the context of this verse, I discovered that everything I needed in life for physical and spiritual resources would be found in putting Jesus first in my life in every area. Jesus’ kingdom became the focus of our family life and living. The struggles were many and along the way we had many victories and difficulties as Satan fought us all the way. But after a life-time of walking with Jesus, I can say that “seeking first his kingdom” will never disappoint you and that Jesus always keeps His Word. I encourage you to put His Kingdom and His Righteousness first because then the rest of life will fall into place.

HONOR TO WHOM HONOR BELONGS!

HONOR TO WHOM HONOR BELONGS! Honor, as a noun, carries the thought of “high respect or esteem, or privilege.” As a verb, honor has the thought of regarding someone with great respect, or the thought of fulfilling an obligation, or keeping an agreement. Jesus said, “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me,” (John 12:26 NIV). The context of this verse is speaking of the future. In the future we will be with Jesus in heaven. In the future we will be honored for our service in God’s kingdom because we serve Jesus today. What we do in daily life here on earth to serve Jesus does affect our life in eternity and our service for Jesus also affects the lives of those around us today

As a Christian, you probably will not be honored by those around you for your service to Jesus today. The Apostle Paul reminds us of the reality of our relationship with Jesus and with people. “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ,” (Galatians 1:10 NIV). It is through being a servant of Jesus today that honor comes in the future.

All of this should encourage us to follow Paul’s admonition, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,” (Colossians 3:23 NIV). Honor will come to those to whom it belongs in the future not necessarily today.

DO YOU WANT TO HAVE FAVOR IN GOD'S EYES?

DO YOU WANT TO HAVE FAVOR IN GOD’S EYES? God says in His Word, “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word,” (Isaiah 66:2 NIV). One dictionary says that to be humble is “having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s own importance.” Webster says humble means, “not proud or haughty: not arrogant or assertive” or “reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of deference or submission.” Someone else has offered this definition, “Humility is something that when you think you have it you just lost it.” Think about that. I think when you see true humility in a person you will recognize it. And in our society those people are few and far between and often a truly humble person will be “walked on” and “mistreated.” But let us not make the mistake of thinking humility is a lack of strength. There is not a person who has ever walked this earth, who has been as humble as Jesus Christ, and no one in their right mind would think Jesus lacked strength of any kind.

Webster also defines “contrite” as “feeling or showing sorrow and remorse for a sin or shortcoming.” Certainly, God expects that of us. If we are not sorrowful and remorseful over our sins, as expressed in our spirit and our actions, how could we ever expect to find favor with a holy God? As Christians we know that sin breaks “fellowship” with God and that “confession” restores us to God’s fellowship and favor. It bothers me today that I observe so many professed Christians living in open sin; living lives that are more like the non-Christians than people who profess to be children of the living Holy God and His Son the Holy Jesus Christ.

Isaiah says that favor with God comes to those “who tremble at” God’s Word. “God says what He means and He means what He says.” I am sure you have heard that old saying. And it is true. God does not speak just to hear his-self talk. God’s Word is filled with words that bring joy to our lives but God’s word also should “strike the fear of God” in us as well. God and His Word deserve our respect and our belief in what He says. When we view the Holy God in His Word, that should cause sinners like us to tremble and fall before a Holy God in reverential fear, confessing our sins and God’s Holiness and power. Then and only then can we expect the real favor of God in our lives.

WORTHLESS?

WORTHLESS? There are many people in this world who feel they are worthless. There are people who make it their main objective in life to make other people around them feel worthless. Many people are driven to commit su***de because of their despair that comes from the depth of these feelings of worthlessness. It appears that we have reached new levels of attempts to bully and cause these feelings of worthlessness in very vulnerable young people through the social media. And often this leads them to acts of violence. Indeed, we have entire industries today built on helping people find their self-worth. But many of these industries lead these hopeless people to build their self-worth on foundations of sand.

Jesus just has a way of putting all this into perspective for us, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows,” (Luke 12:6-7 NIV). People spend too much time listening to the criticisms of the world and what the world considers things and people of value. People who look to find their value in the system of the world, which is under the influence of Satan, will never find real value in life because once you achieve what the world considers of value you will find it never lives up to God’s standards. One of the best things that parents can do for their children is to help them find what God really considers of value in this life and for eternity and where each of us finds our self-worth. Regardless of what the world says and regardless of what the bullies around us say real worth in God’s eyes is not based on our appearance, intelligence, or social standing. Our value is based on what the Creator thinks of us and He loves us at all times and will take care of us all the time. We are valuable to God.

We will always have critics around us and we will always have those who try to bully us but our God is bigger than those people and our self-esteem is based on our relationship with God not with the world. As adults we need to be aware of those around us who are going through a crisis of feeling worthless and we need to encourage them and lead them to God’s evaluation of them and His care and concern for them.

STRONG AND COURAGEOUS!

STRONG AND COURAGEOUS. There he was standing on the bank of the river Jordan. Moses was dead and now there was a new leader. Joshua was standing, maybe bowing, before God and getting his instructions as the new leader. What a humbling, awesome experience that must have been as Joshua listened to God and heard what God was going to do with him and the people of Israel. God uttered these words to Joshua three times in a space of moments and five times in the book of Joshua, “Be strong and courageous,” (Joshua 1:6,7,9). This was not a time to be afraid, weak, timid or retreating. This was a time to act boldly, face the enemy and put all the muscle and resources of God and Israel to work. It was a time for new leaders and new heroes to step forward.

This is true of the Church today. We need people to stand for Jesus, be heroes for God’s cause and advance the kingdom of God. We need men and women to serve God with abandon, fight the spiritual battle and lead the church into the future. We need churches to be strong and courageous in every part of our country and among every ethnic group. God gave Joshua the command to be strong and courageous but He also gave Joshua three reasons why he should be strong and courageous.

God does not ask us to do anything that He has not provided for. God told Joshua that He would give the people of Israel “every place where you set your foot,” and God’s promise was based on this fact, “As I promised Moses,” (Joshua 1:3 NIV). When God makes a promise, He keeps it in every generation. And as God’s Church we need to act on His promises. Often, we humans fail to keep our promises but God never does. God told Joshua that, “No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you,” (Joshua 1:5 NIV). God was with Moses in power and so would He be with Joshua. His power was sufficient to meet every need and overcome every obstacle. And God gives us His power through the work of the Holy Spirit to accomplish great things for God today. God promised Joshua, “I will never leave you nor forsake you,” (Joshua 1:5 NIV). When God is with you then you can do whatever God commissions you to do. Jesus gave us the same promise as well. He is always with us. The Church needs a new generation of leaders like Joshua, both male and female, so that the Church can do God’s appointed work of building His Kingdom. We need a new generation to be “strong and courageous” in serving God. Are you part of the new generation?

LOST!

LOST! When the earthquake of 2010 happened in Haiti, a ministry team I was serving with in Haiti, had just departed from Haiti two days before. Pastor Elysee Joseph, a Haitian friend and ministry partner, was supposed to leave Haiti on the day of the earthquake but he was stuck in Haiti for an entire month. The Administrator of Caribbean Vision Ministries in Haiti, at the time of the earthquake, had a sister in Port Au Prince. Right after the quake, Pastor Joseph and the Administrator, went to Port Au Prince to look for her sister. They never found her. Another one of the employees had a daughter at the University in Port Au Prince. He went to Port Au Prince to look for his daughter. He never found her. The two ladies being searched for were buried in the rubble, and likely their bodies were scooped up in the rubble and taken to the dump, a fate of thousands of people during that event. It is sad to talk about that time in life. The one redeeming factor in this tragedy is that both of these ladies who died knew Jesus as Savior and Lord.

There are billions of people on planet earth, and some in your community and my community, who are not saved and they are facing impending if not imminent judgment. No one knows when the last day of their life could be, today or any other day. We all have friends, family, neighbors and co-workers who are lost and need Christ. If one of these people turned up missing, we would pull out all stops to try and find them. 911 calls would be made and TV, radio and newspaper articles would be used. We would place posters on the light posts and telephone poles. Yet those same people, who appear to be safe & sound right now, face eternity lost from God and often we show very little interest in them.

But praise God, Jesus is interested in the lost. Jesus loves spiritually lost people and He rejoices along with all those in heaven when a lost sinner repents and comes to Him. Jesus shared this truth in this way in the Gospel of Luke, “Then Jesus told them this parable: ‘Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” You know the rest of the story. When the one is found then a party with the neighbors occurs. “Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found the lost sheep.’” And then Jesus makes this pointed application, “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent,” (Luke 15:1-7 NIV). There are spiritually lost people all around us. Do we need a disaster to awaken us to that reality? Or do we take action steps now so that people will be prepared for eternity if or when disaster strikes?
