Today August 29th is the Memorial of the Passion of St. John the Baptist.

The Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist complements the Solemnity of his birth, celebrated on 24 June. John is the cousin of Jesus. He was conceived when his parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, were elderly. Both his parents were descendants of priestly families. John’s birth took place about six months prior to that of Christ, and coincides with the Gospel episode of the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth. The liturgical celebration of his martyrdom, which occurred between 31 and 32, has ancient origins. It was already celebrated in France in the 5th century, and in Rome the following century and can be traced to the dedication of a small basilica that dates back to the 5th century where he was buried in Sabaste in Samaria. Tradition holds it was on this day that his head was found. Pope Innocent II had it later transferred to Rome to the Church of Saint Sylvester in Capite.

Today, August 28th we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Augustine.

The son of St. Monica was born in 354 AD in Thagaste, a Roman-Berber city in the province of Numidia. At that time, Numidia’s capital was Cirta, distinct from the neighboring Roman province of Africa, whose capital was Carthage in modern Tunisia. Augustine grew up in a Christian household, but as a young man he drifted into sin and false beliefs. His sins of impurity and pride darkened his mind so much that he could not see the Divine Truth, despite his brilliance.

Through the prayers of his holy mother and the preaching of St. Ambrose, Augustine came to see that Christianity was the one true faith. Still, he hesitated, thinking he could never live a pure life.

One day he heard the story of two men suddenly converted after reading the life of St. Antony of the Desert. Deeply ashamed, he cried out to his friend Alipius:"What are we doing? Unlearned people are taking Heaven by force, while we, with all our knowledge, remain bound in the mud of our sins!"

Full of sorrow, Augustine rushed into a garden and begged God for help. Suddenly he heard the voice of a child singing, "Take up and read!" Believing these words were from God, he opened the Letters of St. Paul and read the first passage he sawβ€”a call to abandon impurity and live in imitation of Christ. That moment changed his life forever.

Augustine was baptized, became a priest, and then Bishop of Hippo Regius. He spent the rest of his life serving the Church as a preacher, defender of the faith, and one of the greatest Catholic writers in history. He founded a religious community, supported the poor, practiced great humility, and fought against powerful heresies. On the wall of his room he had written in large letters:

"Here we do not speak evil of anyone."

St. Augustine of Hippo is the patron of brewers because of his conversion from a former life of loose living, which included parties, entertainment, and worldly ambitions. His complete turnaround has been an inspiration to many who struggle with habits or vices they long to break.

Today, August 27th we celebrate the Feast day of St. Monica.

Monica was a Christian, but her husband Patricius was a pagan and a man of loose morals. Monica's virtues and prayers, however, converted him, and he was baptized a year before his death. When her son, Augustine, joined the Manichean sect and went astray in faith and morals, Monica's tears and prayers for her son were incessant. She followed him to Milan, where Augustine went to teach, and there continued to storm heaven with her prayers for her son. Finally, she had the joy of witnessing St. Ambrose baptize Augustine in 387. She died in Ostia, as she and her son gazed at the sea and discoursed about the joys of the blessed.

St. Monica had spent her entire married and widowed life leading the unfaithful to Christ. Women today are encouraged by her devotion to God through her marital struggles, and relentless prayers and good tiding for her son Augustine, who had fallen away. So many mothers today feel the pain that St. Monica did in seeing their children leave the Faith. In her, they have powerful intercession and an example that in God’s providence, the long-suffering tears of a devout mother can lead her children back not only to the Church but even to high sanctity.

Today August 24th we celebrate Saint Bartholomew, who was one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus. All that is known of him with certainty is that he is mentioned in the synoptic gospels and Acts as one of the twelve apostles. His name, a patronymic, means "son of Tolomai" and scholars believe he is the same as Nathanael mentioned in John, who says he is from Cana and that Jesus called him an "Israelite...incapable of deceit." The Roman Martyrology says he preached in India and Greater Armenia, where he was flayed and beheaded by King Astyages. Tradition has the place as Abanopolis on the west coast of the Caspian Sea and that he also preached in Mesopotamia, Persia, and Egypt. The Gospel of Bartholomew is apochryphal and was condemned in the decree of Pseudo-Gelasius.

Today August 22nd we celebrate The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As Queen, Mother Mary not only intercedes on our behalf, she also acts as her Son’s mediator. From her heavenly throne, the Queen Mother of Heaven and Earth is entrusted with the grace of God. She is not the source, but she is privileged to be the instrument of distribution. As a loving mother, nothing pleases her more than to lavish every good thing upon her children on earth. She longs to gather all of her children together in Heaven, with and in her divine Son.

Though the liturgical and theological evolution of today’s memorial might seem complex, the heart of it is simple. We not only have a mother in Heaven, we also have a Queen Mother. As Mary is the Queen Mother of God, we must turn to her with childlike faith and simplicity. As a young child runs to a loving mother in time of need, never questioning her love, protection, and care, so we must run to her. She is our protectress, our refuge, our hope, and our sweet delight. Her affection is perfect and her motherly love unmatched.

As we honor the Queen of Heaven today, ponder the Church’s ever-deepening understanding of her role. As the Church has increased its comprehension of Mary’s exalted role through the centuries, so we must individually make this discovery throughout our lives. Turn to her, seek her prayers, rely upon her intercession, and honor her as your mother and your queen.

Today, August 21st we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Pius X.

Born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto on June 2, 1835, he grew up in a large impoverished family in Riese, Italy. His deep sense of vocation led him to the priesthood in 1858, where he quickly distinguished himself through his dedication and pastoral zeal.

As a parish priest and later as Bishop of Mantua and Patriarch of Venice, Giuseppe's leadership was marked by a fearless commitment to spiritual and moral integrity. His motto, Instaurare Omnia in Christo ("To restore all things in Christ"), encapsulated his vision of Catholic renewal, a vision he carried into his papacy when he was elected Pope Pius X in 1903.

Pius X's courage shone brightly in his determination to make the Eucharist more accessible. He famously encouraged frequent Communion and lowered the age for First Communion to seven, emphasizing the profound spiritual nourishment it provides. "Holy Communion is the shortest and safest way to Heaven," he declared, challenging Catholics to deepen their relationship with Jesus in the Eucharist.

His humble background was no obstacle in relating to a personal God and to people whom he loved genuinely. Saint Pius X gained his strength, his gentleness and warmth for people from the source of all gifts, the Spirit of Jesus. In contrast, we often feel embarrassed by our backgrounds. Shame makes us prefer to remain aloof from people whom we perceive as superior. If we are in a superior position, on the other hand, we often ignore simpler people. Yet we, too, have to help β€œrestore all things in Christ,” especially the wounded people of God.
